Montgomery, Horswill, Pitt, Kerr, Hughes, Tueart, ring any bells lads. Didn't need fabulous facilities to produce that lot did we. Don't know why but seems like the talent isn't there any more, doesn't help mind that none of the U21's ever get a run in the first team.

Anyone who can work the search function on here will know that I personally don't rate McNamee one bit as a bloke and in most respects as a coach. However, I do have some sense of empathy for the man as he's been here under X number of managers all of whom have had different ideas and plans as well as how much they even looked at the academy. We can only wonder what sort of job he and the coaches would have done under a manager like Gus but had stuck around at the club for longer than 18 months. However that doesn't excuse his attitude as a person and a coach, I for one am happy to see a man like him go from the club if this is true!

Fortunately we seem to have 3 or 4 young players in the Dev squad who have some quality about them, which is a promising thing for the club and I think by the end of the season we will see most of the talented ones feature for us at some point. Now if we can begin to produce players like them on a more regular basis then the clubs academy will be hailed a success but as much as having the right coaches in there, it's about having the right plan and sticking to it.

Danny Philpott was head of schoolboy recruitment not so long ago, hope he's bringing in a decent coaching team in too. Ged has well and truly had his day here.

That's a very specific number there, how did you come about it? I wonder, for example, how many English clubs have produced more than three players of Henderson's calibre in the last ten years.
Everton.

Have any youngsters left under McNamee and gone on to other premier league clubs? Surely that would be one way of deciding if McNamee is losing us talent

About f***ing time, now that all his young male relatives have had a crack at being in the academy

Have heard similar sort of craic myself. Giving his relations games and having favourites amongst the other players. And just generally being a kernt to the ones he doesnt favour

Our academy has been ok hasn't it? Henderson 20million, Leadbitter 3.2million, waghorn 3million....Colback should have been 5million.

The Academy has been open 11 years and Leadbitter wasn't produced by it. He broke into the first team the same year it was built. So that's three players in 11 years. Not what I'd call ok, it's been open long enough now to have seen young lads old enough for the first team brought through it since they were young bairns and we are seeing nothing.
We live in an area that has produced more England internationals per head than any other region in the country and we have very very little to show for it.

How long before this forum will be expecting this bloke to be finding the new Rooney and Barkley ?

Im a sport scientist and have worked there with Ged, Elliott and other academy staff. Ged is a very knowledgable coach and personally I like him very much and we get on really well. Elliot again is a great guy and coach. However that doesn't mean there aren't wrong things. Football is its own 'world' and is rife with 'who you know' just look at first team staff changes. Ged and Elliott do bring in players, ppl who they want, football allows that to happen! They also can be brusque with those not in favour and 'rule the roost' a bit. again I think the football world enables the 'topdog' attitude to happen. But both guys can spot talent and nuture it, with great coaching and training sessions.
Just like other academies SAFC tries to create an all round player at young ages, sometimes it's almost like making a team of robots, wanting them to be able to play in different positions, and have set skills. This can lose talent which doesn't fit this 'brief' creative players and set position players can emerge later even though they were rejected by the acadmey. Again this is the way academies are and not just the fault of our academy 'losing' good talent. Anyways felt I had to speak up for the academy and Ged and Elliot, they have great facilities and great staff. There are wrong things to be sure, don't know if those will change with a different person in charge though.
