McGeady

You don't play at the highest level including Champions League without having something about you. Only something this squad could dream of. Got to get him in around the first X1.

Let's be honest - he's hardly a proven "highest level" player. He played about 30 games in the Premier League for Everton where he isn't exactly remembered fondly. And the Champions League appearances came when he was in Russia didn't they? So it's not like they came because he was playing for a big team in one of the top leagues. And all of that was 8/9 years ago now so hardly relevant.

He's got talent, I won't deny that. But he's not a player who can fit in with a team gameplan - he basically does what he wants. For me, the talent he has doesn't outweigh the negative aspects he brings to the team overall.

I just don’t think you can carry passengers like McGeady. The YouTube highlights look good but never reveals what the team loses with his lack of mobility.

Fortunately we play with enough holding midfielders that they should be able to cope for the last 20-25 mins of having a player who isn't as defensive minded as the rest.
The game changed. There was a time (1970’s) when you could indulge a Frank Worthington. It changed in the 90’s as fitness became the key. It is why LevTissier never left Southampton.

How is that working for us currently then? They're all fit but aren't doing much going forward.

I would say that is due to lacking a dominant midfielder who commands the ball and drives the team up the pitch.

It's a yes please from me.
He's not perfect, but he's good at football, miles ahead of anyone else in our squad, buthe needs to be managed properly.
When we are back in the stadium, even as a sub he would give us a lift, we only have about 3 other players we even have a song for! As an impact sub would you rather Danny f***ing Graham wobbling on the sideline not exactly chomping at the bit, or McGeady?
His penalty v rotherham still pisses me off mind. But then I love him for Wembley. That's the type of player he is and we need that.

I don’t hold out much hope of him significantly improving us even if he is registered. Was shit for us and Charlton last season, has barely played, a year older and for all his natural talent never a team player although under Ross I thought he did try to put the effort in he was still more likely to try and beat another man than play someone in. An option from the bench perhaps but at expense of Diamond, Neil, Hawkes or Curry.

Maguire is nowhere near the ability of Mcgeady.

Mark Lynch, Cabral, Charis Mavrias, and Jack Rodwell all played Champions League football as well.

That’s a Parky question though, he’s gone as should be our reliance on ageing journeymen.

Diamond has looked quite lively off the bench but his crossing has been pretty woeful. He also blazed wide near post in one game when he should have hit it across the goal. Schoolboy error.

McGeady is a seasoned pro with proven quality. That's why I'm not comparing him to unproven kids.

should be straight back in with the first team training and building up his fitness

great player at this level even at his age and considering we create the absolute square root of fuck all having someone like that in the fold to change a game would be massive

whatever he's supposedly done it should be a clean slate now with a new manager
Even if he's not capable of producing over the 90 minutes, or he doesn't fit into the managers system, he would be a good option from the bench. Expecially if were on the front foot and he can spend most of the time high up the pitch. We don't really have any other players that can beat a couple of players from a standing start which is why we aren't very creative IMHO.

I don’t want to fall into the trap of comparing the two as it’s not fair on either but if you’re going to do so you should judge them by the same standards- I’ve seen plenty of woeful McGeady crosses and examples of bad decision making. As a seasoned pro with proven quality he doesn’t have the same excuse for it as Diamond has.
