Matt Phillips.......

Would love this to be true.

O'Neill could mould him into another Ashley Young IMO.

Ashley Young set the PL alight and was snapped up at the first possible transfer window for a huge fee. Phillips has found no suitors (bar a loan spell in L1 with Sheff Utd) since signing for Blackpool.......there must be a reason for this.

Looking at similar type players ie Gardner Vaughan will get us nowhere , is this what its all about since the Bent sale , we had half a go and then the bottle went . We have gone back over the last 2 years and the signals comin out now suggest its lets be happy with mediocrity or less .

Been the way for this club since the fifty's man, apart from a short spell, when we signed Bent, etc, cheap and cheerful just like the shithole of a town, plaster over the cracks and hope it holds together.

A lot people were shocked MON spent so much on him. £9.5mil iirc

Phillips has been pretty impressive this year, he's still young and won't cost that much.

A gamble worth taking imo.

Ashley young was barely noticed in his time at Watford by most and his transfer and fee had people questioning O'Neill' sanity. Thankfully O'Neill knew better than most.

Ashley young set the championship alight with Watford before being snapped up by villa. In fact you could argue Phillips has made a similar impact with a similar sized club although Phillips also boasts a decent season in the premier league season before last. They are a good comparison though

Aye, not much call for pinpoint crosses and dead-ball precision in a winger.

If he done it all with any consistency rather than waste energy elsewhere meaning he contributes less than he should to the attacking side you'd have no arguments. But the reason he's here and we could do with another right sider is because he doesn't do what you say often enough.

Similar type players?

In saying that do you mean older, completely different types, who have had chances to play consistently at higher levels and not really took them?

Don't think so Perry.....i certainly noticed him and he got rave reviews in those first few months....he got 3 goals and 3 assists in his time in the PL with Watford. Part of my point is that Young was rapidly snapped up at a massive fee yet Phillips has spent a full year in the Championship and even L1 on loan since his introduction to the PL. Surely ALL the other PL managers/scouts can't be missing a trick at such a reasonable price.

Wrong Jarvis......he set the PL alight for the 1st half of season 2006/7 before O'Neill swooped.

He was noticed by anyone who watched the play off semi final against crystal palace at sellhurst park where iirc he had a hand in all three goals and scored a lovely free kick. Similar level of profile to Phillips like

Matt Phillips is no better than we have , if and its a big if we are pursuing him its not going to improve us . IMO .

How do you know they aren't bidding for him? The press havent strongly linked us with Phillips (whereas they have with Fletcher for example) but it seems that we have made bids for both a while ago. Just because it's not being reported in the press doesnt mean it's not happening.

Regardless choosing our transfer targets just because there's interest from many other clubs would be a ludicrous thing to do, I'm sure MON and co are more than capable of being able to make up their minds themselves.

Nope just checked he set the championship alight scoring 14 goals including his stunning performance in the play offs. I reckon that's what caught o Neil's eye, but nevertheless a cracking season in the championship coupled with 6 decent months in the premier league....by early 20's they've achieved about the same and prime time for a big move and step up

Your last sentence makes no sense. I'll assume you meant to delete some of it and forgot.

Larsson played for a good few months near the end of the season with an injury that needed an operation, so it wasn't surprising his form dipped, but despite this he ended the season as our joint top goalscorer (in all competitions). That isn't the description of a player that needs replacing, and he's not going to be happy warming the bench while some "marquee" signing takes the first-choice right-winger spot from him.

A young lad with pace and energy to come off the bench when Larsson's tired (and so are the defenders) is exactly what we need, and Phillips fits that bill to a tee.

another underwhelming name is strongly linked to the club

you fishing mate

No just think this lad is a good player with a lot of improvement in him. O neill has a very good record of bringing on this type of player and the thought of McLean and phillips in the same team is an exciting one, particularly if we get fletcher as well

Phillips had a storming season last year, playing on the left, the right and up front and scored 16 goals.

He is big (6'1"), strong and like shit off a stick and has done the business at every level he has played at so far (including England U19, U20 and now full international for Scotland).

i think he has a chance of being a top professional
