Matt Phillips.......

Does anyone really believe he would be anything other than a bench warmer/competition.....i would be amazed if Larsson was dropped to accommodate Phillips. If he's signed with that in mind and not considered as one of the "quality" buys we're in for then that's fine although i would much prefer to see real competition for Larsson (and McClean) with a Johnson/McGeady type of signing.

I do, Larsson is decent, but his form is too indifferent and doesn't always contribute in the right ways.

If Phillips was signed I think it would be with one eye on replacing Larsson in the near future, if not straight away, as he'd bring more to the fold in terms of what he can add to the attacking side of our game than Larsson does.

From the little I've seen of both I'd take a gamble on Phillips over McGeady.

Agree. He really does put me in mind of a right footed McClean. No subtlety but likely to be very effective in the premier league. A real goal threat too. What this means for other additions out wide is another matter entirely, though.

I am not trying to slate Wickham, I think he has loads of potential and I have high hopes for him. But the money should be spent on experience, not another kid who 'could make it'.

I disagree in the case of wingers.

We've got a quality right-winger already in Larsson.

Bringing in an understudy is exactly what we need in that position.

I think Seb just doesn't offer enough down the right. The wing and up front are areas of improvement this season.

Aye, not much call for pinpoint crosses and dead-ball precision in a winger.

Some people need to realise that o neill is likely to be looking at players who can fit into both a 442 or 451/433 as he often deployed both systems at villa and is likely to here. No harm whatsoever in having the players to change it during a game IMO. Players like sessegnon, Campbell, mclean plus Phillips, fletcher and, if he comes good wickham fit the bill perfectly just like Milner young, downing agbonlahor Carew and heskey did at villa.

I'm lost for words here.
Dead balls are second to none. but his crossing from open play is 9 out of 10 times, poor. And don't start me on corners!

To be fair Alfred has a point.

Phillips is a risk, unproven in the Premier League (he wasn't an ever present for Blackpool). He has potential but he's not going to walk into our first team which is what we need. We don't need another Matt Piper.

Matt Piper was a bloody good winger.

It was his injury that screwed him up.

His crossing from open play isn't particularly great actually.

Piffle.

The only problem is that nobody's there to get on the end of them most of the time.

That simply isn't true.

He puts the ball in the right place 9/10 times, but 8.5/9 times there's nobody there cos both our strikers are still back in midfield.

Given the level he came from I thought he showed a lot of potential with Blackpool, the couple of times I seen him last season he didn't seem to have improved that much.

Think with someone like MON he could still improve quite a bit (needs to track back more) and is certainly worth a punt if the fee is right. If we sign him I still reserve the right to call him shite and a waste of money after his 1st 20 minutes or so. :)

Agree - probably more consistent and cheaper. Plus he's had a taste of the PL and he did okay in a poor team.

He started 6 games and came off the bench 21 times scoring 1 goal. Why would we replace a proven PL performer who was our leading scorer (among players we actually owned) and is without equal at dead ball situations in the PL (Arsene Wenger's words, not mine).

Not quite sure this "did ok in a poor team" argument holds water either.....Vaughan was their P.O.T.S. that year and he hasn't exactly set the SOL alight..

As i said previously, if he's cover/competition that's fine but if he really was as good as some on here are suggesting there would be a scramble for his services and he wouldn't be leaving for a paltry £3m.

All imo of course...

Looking at similar type players ie Gardner Vaughan will get us nowhere , is this what its all about since the Bent sale , we had half a go and then the bottle went . We have gone back over the last 2 years and the signals comin out now suggest its lets be happy with mediocrity or less .
