Matt Phillips.......

Nope just checked he set the championship alight scoring 14 goals including his stunning performance in the play offs. I reckon that's what caught o Neil's eye, but nevertheless a cracking season in the championship coupled with 6 decent months in the premier league....by early 20's they've achieved about the same and prime time for a big move and step up

You suggested that Phillips had the bonus of a decent PL season whereas Young was snapped up from a Championship Watford team though. Young was outstanding for those first few months in the PL and that's why O'Neill stepped in for him. Phillips by comparison was allowed to drop down the leagues after his PL introduction with no (apparent) interest in him.

No axe to grind here.......fine as cover/competition but he's not (yet) 1st team material imo.

Phillips had a storming season last year, playing on the left, the right and up front and scored 16 goals.

He is big (6'1"), strong and like shit off a stick and has done the business at every level he has played at so far (including England U19, U20 and now full international for Scotland).

i think he has a chance of being a top professional

Here here!

And we get ALL this for a reputed £3m.......wow.

Read back to what I said. Regardless he did well in the ccc and played it a bit in the prem. granted he didn't make the impact that Ashley young did with Watford, but it's hardly an exact science is it and Phillips had far less experience than young when promoted with Blackpool. It's a similar transfer although phillips is less established than young was which will be reflected in the transfer fee no doubt

I would be surprised if he is that cheap

Reading were recently linked with him for £1m.

I just don't understand why he wasn't snapped up at any stage during his PL debut season or the subsequent Championship season if he is that good or why the fee would be so small now.

Aren't blackpool absolutely desperate for cash now?

I did....and it still reads the same mate. You thought Phillips had the advantage of a PL season under his belt whereas Young hadn't when Villa signed him.

During the PL season Holloway said he wouldn't part with him for 10m and he was only 18/19 at the time.

Does it matter if he made a mistake?

I remember his outstanding performance against us a couple of seasons ago and in the few times I've seen him since he has looked a really exciting player. I would be pleased if we could sign him.

Matt Phillips is no better than we have , if and its a big if we are pursuing him its not going to improve us . IMO .

No better than Elmo? That's who he will be replacing, not Seb. He's young quick and has potential. Perfect competition for Seb and as an impact sub. I'd be pleased to see him here although I thought Zaha or Redmond were more likely.

I genuinely fail to see what people want.

Look at the bigger picture.

We've been a yo-yo side since the 60s. We've now established ourselves as a mid table premier league side. In reality, the past five or six years have been the best five or six year spell for decades. It's the first time since the late 50s that we've had six successive seasons of top flight football.

We've spent an awful lot of money doing this - managers without a track record have spent - and in some cases wasted - a fortune.

We've wanted a manager with a proven track record.

We've wanted a manager who doesn't have to rely on a chequebook.

We've wanted a manager who can mould a team, not a collection of expensively assembled individuals.

We want players who'll come here, good players, who'll want to stay, rather than seeing us as stepping stone.

We've got all of this in place now. Let O'Neill get on with his job, rather than having a hissy fit when we're linked with a player who's not a big enough name for you.

I've read with interest comments criticising others about having blind faith in O'Neill. When something's proven it's not a question of having faith.

To use an analogy, if you appoint a cleaner to be CEO of a major company you need blind faith. If you appoint a previously successful CEO into the role then you have confidence he'll do a good job, and give him time to sort things out; rather than whining because he hasn't doubled profits after 8 months, or bought different furniture than you would have done.

The fact is, for the first time in a hell of a long time, we have a manager who's proven; a manager who's been there and done it.

I'm happy to back any signing MON makes this season, as I'm confident he'll do it well.

After all, if we're not prepared to fully back MON now, we're never going to fully back any one.
