Massive earthquake affecting Turkey and Syria

I don’t know about on the ground, but on tv it just looked like a high tide that kept on coming in. Not like a huge crashing wave. I imagine we’d have been quite safe in the hotel.

Why? I’d imagine there is less chance of gas mains being underneath you, nothings going to fall on you, and unless a crevasse opens up underneath, you should be ok.
Soil liquefaction.

Few Years ago I was in a meeting just outside of Istanbul and a fairly substantial earthquake. The building shook and we all evacuated very quickly. One of the Turks went into panic mode. Very surreal.

Glad I wasn’t back in the hotel, was told it was swaying :)
Built to withstand a significant one.

Horrific stuff hope those alive are rescued.

Anyone remember the 2008 UK earthquake? The whole house shook couldn't believe it.

We were told differently.

Depends where you are in the world. Some countries have excellent standards embedded within their building codes for seismic accelerations. Some, however don’t.

The concrete buildings which are seen to collapse in the footage posted in this very thread unfortunately are a testament to this.

Soil liquefaction is horrendous when it happens. But as said, not all souls suffer from this phenomenon during an earthquake. There’s a few factors which must align first.

Thoughts and prayers to all those affected.

From a purely selfish perspective ..just booked a holiday for July in Turkey. Wonder how far the aftershocks have reached.

Aftershocks were felt as far as Cairo so everyone in Turkey would of felt it.

Problem is Turkey lies on a dormant seismic line, so whenever it reactivates , it gets really bad. 1999 was a 7.6, 1990 was a 7.9

Because this is 2 separate ones this one's really bad, even Israel have sent military aid to Syria it's that bad and them 2 have been fighting longer than most of us have been alive

Don’t know your condition but find it a bit chilling. Like that lad that chucked the little French kid from the viewing platform of Tate Modern.
Well no. I don’t wish harm on anyone at all. I’m just not particularly moved by it. I hope the death toll is lower than people are predicting though.

Grauniad reporting thatTurkish police have detained several people over their social media posts about the earthquake.

I would have thought they'd be too busy trying to help the thousands of people affected by the earthquake

See I don't count myself as a nutter and its horrible what happened but those videos were mad.

I wouldn't say I enjoyed them but I did find it fascinating I won't lie. Same with the 2003 tsunami and other natural disasters.

It shows you insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things. May make me sound like a nutter but honestly I'm a very caring person
Nah it's normal to be fascinated by these things. There's a reason that serial killers are a billion dollar industry but I think most people aren't exactly gleeful they are out there killing people.

Difference between being fascinated or interested and not giving a fuck about the people who end up victims to them though.
