Mason Mount

Mount plays CM. All the players you’ve listed don’t.

If you’re going to come in here like Billy big tactics, at least know your CMs from your CAMs

He's just been put into a slightly withdrawn role by Southgate over the last few games. He's previously been included almost exclusively as an attacking midfielder, which is where he generally plays his club football.

His form for England now and last tournament hasn't been good. But Gareth likes his work rate- he's pretty much England's Jack Ross' Honeyman or McCarthy's Jeff Whitley.

Think you need to learn you cm's from your cam's then tell me apart from 'link' occasionally and close down and harass what Mount brings to the big stage.

Thought the midfield was left a man short and both Rice and Bellingham looked like they were pulling a caravan. They are games where Henderson in front of the 2 CB's and Rice and Bellingham left to go and cause havoc will be the correct tactic and it quickly became very apparent that tonight was one of those games. Also you have to go with the obvious sometimes as well, like play the better player ie Fodden and Grealish instead of Mount and Saka.
Saka was fantastic in first game so had to start and grealish is more of an impact player. Fodden will get his chance against wales

Maddison would of made no difference to team tonight

Not sure. Anyone who wasn't going to panic in possession and try to break lines instead of playing sterile may have been an improvement.

Then again let's judge the players who did come on after 69mins or so like the rest of the side then?

What did he do tonight ?
Forgot he was playing against part timers

He played shite

What’s your point?

“Gareth’s golden boys” “gareth’s fav”

What an absolute total load of utter shite

We drew a game of football

Get over it

Foden should start ahead of him against Wales. Foden is capable of playing in multiple positions and will slot in wherever. I like Mount but he had a crap game tonight.

He was infuriating like. Mis-controlled the ball so many times, and spent so much time chasing shadows too high up the pitch, which then allowed them to play straight through our midfield. He gets into good positions, such as for his shot at the end of the first half, but he went to pieces under pressure almost every other time.

Said it on the match thread but these products of academy football like Maddison,Henderson,Saka,Rice etc etc are absolutely devoid of any imagination or drive.

Keep it simple pass it to another shirt is drummed into them and mangers like Southgate love that,as they are frightened to loose and will take a 0-0 draw all day with hopefully the chance to “Nick one at the other end.”

Terrible to watch

Thank the heck some on here are not the English manager....not one player tonight was at it but to try and put mount as the reason we were poor is laughable.. he is a young class player and will prove people wrong. Main thing tonight was not to lose and we didn't. How many times we threw away tournaments in the past. Let's just go stuff the Welsh now
Hi Gareth.

I'd really want us to find a way to get Foden into the team, AND I'm not a huge fan of Mount.....but I don't think playing Foden in CM is the answer, especially considering that Bellingham bombing about as he does leaves us a bit more exposed in midfield.

Would imagine if we're gonna have a more attacking partner for Rice (which Bellingham is), then Southgate will always go for a hard working player to be the focal point.

Foden should be playing for one of Saka or Sterling though, imho.

Once Kyle Walker is back and we're playing 3-5-2, there's even less chance of him getting a game though I'm afraid

As opposed to what - footballers grown in a lab?

Potentially, but he offers very very little defensively, hence Guardiola plays him wide still. He could well become that player but it would be a complete punt now
I think you could play Foden in this midfield 3 mind. Fully accept what you say about the defensive side of his game, but in a match where we should be capable of pushing on and trying to win it I don't think we really need him to be at all defensive. After all you've got Rice and Bellingham who are both very capable defensively (you would have to ask Bellingham to hold back a bit mind). Foden could be in there with licence to get forward and support, it would seem to suit him down to the ground. Mount was so ineffective yesterday it was frustrating to see him get the 90.

If we're going to say that Foden absolutely can't play there, then it would make me think that when walker is back we should go to 3 centre backs and remove the Mount midfield player completely tbh. They're used to playing that system and at least it's more cover for maguire. Also means if Trippier has another shit game we could think about using TAA without having to worry as much about his struggles defensively. For now, and certainly in this system, trippier would still get the nod for me
