Mason Mount

Exactly take that free kick to us three minutes for time, I thought Shaw was waiting for a cup of tea
That looked like football from the 1950s. A big line of players just outside the box and HOOF. WTF do they actually do in these training camps? They certainly arent working on restarts, corners, free kicks, throw ins etc etc
Southgate needs an intern posting with the Dutch lass who coaches the lionesses to actually learn how to manage in game situations.
supposedly leftish but he didnt do any work going backwards or to help out Bellingham and Rice. Not a 3 man midfield the way we set up. He was given a licence to press and somewhat be a 10 but he never effected the game at all. The whole team was bad but the game passed him by completely. He played the full 90 and was so far under par. Hes got 30odd caps He has to start turning up for the tricky games and not just for the minnows
If he played for Soton, Villa, Palace etc he’d be the same player but nowhere near the England team. This “new Lampard” Schtick is bollocks but the press n Southgate are gonna run with it in the hope it happens and makes them look like visionaries.

England play 4-3-3. Foden doesn’t play in the middle bank of 3 for City generally. He may do eventually. But he’s not a central midfield player now
4-3-3 doesn’t mean 3 CMs like.
Mount was not playing as a proper CM in second half, he was in the middle of a front 3 most of the time.
He was f***ing shite, Foden should have came in and has to start next game.

Mount plays CM. All the players you’ve listed don’t.

If you’re going to come in here like Billy big tactics, at least know your CMs from your CAMs
Maddison plays the same role at Leicester
Honestly wonder why Southgate bothered with a 26 man squad, if Mount & and unfit Kane played all game

How? 4-3-3 is essentially 4-2-3-1 when your playing with one striker, he fits perfectly. Mount wasn’t playing that second half as an out and out CM. He was in no man’s land the whole game.
Because he’s rarely played it. In a City team that dominates possession, way more than England ever will, he’s not trusted there.

Yet.

He may get there. But he doesn’t have much experience in a 3 at all. In a way better team

This is 100% true, I'm absolutely convinced of it.

He wouldn’t have been in a 3 tho. Not a flat 3 anyway, once Henderson was on it was 2 holding midfielders with mount as a CAM.
It is tough to define the position mind when Kane is drifting all over the place.

He doesn’t play in a 3 at city with Rodri and Gundogan. Even if De Bruyne isn’t fit, he plays further forward

He can 100% play CAM and has many times, at the end of the day Mount offered absolutely nothing.
Luckily we are through but moving forward we can’t continue to play mount in that role, he offers nothing. He’s a poor CM and a poorer CAM. He’s be better off playing Henderson and using Bellingham in mounts current role if he’s reluctant to play Foden

I don’t think he has many times. But I appreciate a civil discussion so cheers

hes really not very good. Why on earth Foden, Maddison, Grealish and co are on the bench while he tosses around beong peripheral and uneffective. I dont like it much
Average footballer but a Southgate favourite alongside Declan Rice…..no dynamism or cohesion largely because of these two and Southgates fear of losing.

I don't mind Mount, he can be a decent player. It he just isn't good enough to be undroppable, which is what he is for England.

He can have good games, excellent at times for Chelsea but he always has runs where he is anonymous.

Not sure you need to directly swap out Mount for another CM either tbh. You have Rice and Bellingham in their already so can play Madison, Foden or Rashford behind the striker instead of Mount if need be but guess Southgate thinks Rice and Bellingham are too light on their own in the middle. That soft middle is a problem for us though.

For me we have to find room for game changing player like Foden and/or Grealish and/or Maddison. Todays game was a perfect example of not being able to break the lines or get in behind a well organised defence. We need creative players on the pitch, not a slightly better than workaday premiership midfielder bizarrely played as a free ranging playmaker who has become as somebody rightly said undropable. We finished the game with only Kane and Hendersons who can pick a pass .and only Rashford who can go past his man ( well Grealish can but then turns back or slows it down too often)
