Martin O’Neill

MON was at his peak in the late 90's and early 00s.
He won't be the first manager to go on past his peak and he won't be the last
Whether he has just lost his enthusiasm, or he's just not able to change with the times I don't know.
He joins a list of soon to be ex-managers who are no longer employable - John Gregory, Alan Curbishley, David O'Leary...etc...etc

Some last longer that others. MON was an excellent young manager but his last 10 years have been a a downward spiral

ONeill is a good manager, but he needs a details man to work alongside him. He was very good with Robertson, but his team-up with Keane was just a disaster waiting to happen.

Guys like ONeill and Moyes can come back, and the game would be better if they did as they were the promising managers of their generation, but they have to do some soul searching and not be afraid to work their way back up. Moyes can still hack it, as he proved at West Ham, but unless Newcastle go for him it’s hard to see him getting another Premier League job. ONeill looks more spent, but if he can find another Robertson I think he could easily come back too.
Contrary view, and of course you’re entitled to it, I can’t agree however and to use the popular phrase *he’s a dinosaur* , out of touch and left light years behind in the modern game.

You don't think there's any chance he's just a busted flush?
To an extent - he always played 3-5-2 and relied on brawn. But he was always more of a motivational manager, who left the training etc to Robertson. I think his approach can still work, and he is intelligent, so is capable of adapting. It’s a question of motivation.

At Celtic, for instance, he was quite lazy and left a lot of the work to his staff. Due to this his level of success goes hand in hand with who he is working with.

Plenty of the Irish players said the same. Himself and Keane need to realise football changes and you have to change with it.
I know for a fact that the ROI squad hated him.

Several senior players managed to stop a revolt during the euros due to the way he man managed the squad.

The squad didn’t have a clue who was playing until the morning of the games. They hadn’t practised any set pieces, scenarios etc as the potential first team etc.

Maybe someone needs to welcome O’Neill to the modern game cos he was like a dinosaur when he was here. Turgid.

Though you loved him at first & results going well. Party with Marty & all that. Was going swimmingly till Everton won the quarter final replay was it not. Wembley trips being booked & everything.

He was finished when he came man

That was Moyes . But I can see a pattern emerging. Which explains taking up residence in Third Division.

It may have been a coincidence of course, but yeah, this.

No coincidence. Even Clough wasn't quite the same without Taylor.

Who?!?!?

Maybe going down with ONeill and having him rebuild would have been a better option either way? It was the constant cycle of desperation moves that really screwed the club up.

I've always thought that going down with either him or Bruce would have better in the long run than hanging around in the PL for another five years being the turd that wouldn't flush.

Yes you are those who don't agree with your theory O neill would've kept us up

My theory his awful style would've relegated us
No I'm giving an opinion that he would have kept us up. I can't prove otherwise. That lad said I was wrong. I want him to prove it. He made the statement of fact.

OK I'll humour you though . His points per game average over the season would have seen us safe.
