Marriage certificates

From today, marriage certificates will include both the bride and groom’s mothers’ names.

Up until now it only included their father’s names.

2021, ladies and gentlemen.
Obviously if it has one it should have the other (I never realised it didn't) but should it have either? What purpose does it serve other than tradition?
I get that fathers giving away their daughters is a tradition as is asking the father's permission for their daughter's hand in marriage, but it all feels a bit 'giving away the family sheep'.

What happened previously when the father wasnt known?
Have a look on the Newcastle Council website marra. They’ve had to put it on their home page as all the mags searching on there was crashing their system.

It makes things like proving rights to citizenship of another country much easier if its through your maternal line for example.

I have recent dual citizenship and this would have lessened the bureaucracy. I'm also doing it for someone else Italian bureaucracy and red tape has to be seen to be believed!!
