Marks and Spencer.

One way streets? It's not exactly difficult like, they have signs and everything. There are large car parks on every corner of town, obviously the cost bit I get, but the one way system?

It's worth noting that you can park for free if you use the businesses around the carpark near the cinema. So if you go to see a film, or have a meal at F&Bs or go to the casino etc it'll cost nowt.
I live in Winnipeg. The city centre is so shit, we won't be going there again

Buses used to be ran by the council for the citizens up until 1986. Now they're run to line the pockets of Stagecoach shareholders first and foremost.
Ah, I see.
I remember when the buses were deregulated which was supposed to be progress. All kinds of old smoke belching wrecks appeared used by small bus companies. None of those Companies exist today mainly due to the bigger bus companies running routes at a loss to put the little players out of business.
Once the competition to the big boys was gone the fares went back up again. I'd normally be against that kind of practice but getting those old buses off the roads was nothing but a good thing.

You forgot about transfares.

Also most buses these days are cleaner.

All vehicles are cleaner these days but the heaps that appeared after deregulation weren't even clean by the standards of that time. I don't know what transfares are/ were.

TWPTE had a decent fleet pre-deregulation.

Transfares were a ticket that let you travel on any public transport in T&W, no matter who was the operator.

I can't remember the name but I remember one company had blue and white buses and nearly passing out walking past one in crowtree rd.
It was after deregulation the problems started when anybody with any old bus could set up a service. Before d.r we had I think 3 bus companies in Sunderland and they were ok. Even the Jolly buses.

I rarely used buses after 1980 due to passing the driving test.:)

Unemployment rate

Great Britain - 4.6%
Sunderland - 7.6%

Median wage (FT workers, before tax)

Great Britain - £28,132
Sunderland - £25,116

I would tend to agree with you
The median wage does not take into relative costs of living in various parts of the UK.

The cost of housing in the SE for example is vastly in excess of that in the NE.

The average disposable income would give a clearer picture.

It's all right for yees lot having a laugh but what are us old un's gana do for underpants? It's all very well saying "Gan commando." but our lass 'ill never put up with skid marks on me strides.

Sunderland town centre used to be at The bottom of High Street . Then it moved gradually inland . It's in Gatesheed now . But no doubt Sunderland council will continue pissing millions of pounds into a totally fucked town centre .
