I like him because hes always there for the one-two when we get a throw in or noone else wants to provide an outlet. The same when our midfielders are happy to hoof the ball up the pitch, Steeds always calm looking to keep posession.

This.

In the games where we panic and resort to long balls, he's great to have because he usually tries to hold it. I can't remember him trying long balls often.

Moron. LOL!

No argument there mate. But my assessment of Steed is based on our improved team which, I hope, no longer does those things for 90% of the game. If we stay disorganized, stupid, and lazy like most of the last 3 years then, yes of course he's class compared to that.

DItto

Steed is the most technically gifted player in the squad, in terms of beating players any way. And he gets the crowd going, moreso than any other player. Even when he's not playing. He doesn't usually lose the ball when he's running with it and does create chances. Set up one for Bent, one for Welbeck and one for himself last night.

I think he's class.

Agree with most of the above except that I think he doesnt creat that many chances and wastes more chances than he creates. A whole lot of fun to watch though. Personally I prefer less "entertaining" wins to more "entertaining" losees. That's why I dont rate him so highly as others

I understand why people dont rate him cause he is frustrating as fuck at times but I love him. Naturally gifted player and when hes on his game a joy to watch.

No argument there mate. I'm just a results oriented person. When forced to choose between victory and artistry I'll go with victory every time

Frustrating as hell to me.

Without doubt the most skilful player we have but an end product from it is rare.

Spot on mate

I just can't understand the love in for the guy, he loses the ball or holds onto it to long, contributes nothing to goalscoring and is a poor crosser the vast majority of the time.
Yet our fans last night were chanting his name and singing for him before he came on and ignoring the lads on the pitch and what did he do when he got onto the pitch? Very little as usual.
Just dont get why he gets on the pitch before elmo in a game when we couldnt win a header either.

I agree with you that Steed is overrated, and I hope we are beyond needing him even as a squad player withing the next year or so.

However, I think this thread has established the reason why so many people love him. It's because his artistry with the ball and technical skills are so exciting. Even I have to atmit that I love it when he nutmegs one of our foes 2 or three times in the same possession :)

They're not mutually exclusive though are they?

So, Brazil 1970 or Greece 2004?

No that's why I said, if FORCED to choose. Unfortunately Steed forces the choice because his effectiveness is WAY BELOW his artistry IMO.

He's been our most productive player in his time at the club.

If you read my posts, I think they make it clear that I consider him to have been one of our best players over the past few years, but that is more a testament to how poor we have been during that period. On our current squad, I just don't rate him.

The perfect contrast is Zenden. He's twice as valuable as Steed in helping the team win IMO

You've lost me.

You've lost me.

We're a much better side now, so that fact that he's been our most productive player IN HIS TIME AT THE CLUB doesn't mean that he should be in the starting lineup NOW.

And ZENDEN IS BETTER THAN STEED.

PS I'm finished talking about Steed! LOL )

He's still productive, in his 20 minutes against Everton he almost won the game for us with two great through balls for Bent and Welbeck. It's not his fault that Darren didn't pass it to Welbeck for a certain goal or that Welbeck didn't do the same for an easy finish from Bent.

Most creative player at the club, most skillful player at the club, one of the best tacklers at the club, a midfielder with great vision. I don't think he's overrated at all.

cant stand people that jump on the bandwagon

steed was played as he should against everton, for the last 30/20 mins
