Making the Play Offs only to lose

That doesn't give any context to the current period. It's an absolutely ridiculous way to look at things. It's like pretending we haven't just come out of the worst period in our history.

The majority didn't think it was achievable. We've had a good season
No ones pretending anything. We're the biggest club in this division by a long way. Our resources should be up there with the best in this division. We're hardly paupers. People discuss SAFC like its just come out of a coma, which just isn't the case.
Your view of success is very limited, dare I say naive.
Success is winning things "the accomplishment of an aim or purpose" If your purpose is simply staying in the second tier of english football may I suggest you should support a smaller club than SAFC and our owners should think the same. We're one of the biggest clubs in this country the aim should never be consolidation it should always be to push on and be as good as we can possibly be.

It is the case isnt it???? youve just contradicted your argument........when Ellis Short left we were left - potless , relegation certainties , lost all our academy talent , lost ticket office , club shop , lost our players shall i go on...thats a pretty bad coma imo

We were and still are the biggest club outside of the top flight. We had players with prem experience and still had a top class academy. Mumba was with us until recently. We've Nail and Patterson now. In no way shape of form should we look at finishing mid table in 2nd division as a good thing.

Our resources aren't though. We've just had 4 seasons of league one revenue, some clubs still have PL parachute payments. You're living with your head up your arse and not seeing what's happened over the last 5/6 as having an impact. Basically you're taking shite

We aim to be in the Premier league and STAY there. Success can’t always be bought and it’s easy to say it can when it’s not your money.

This season has already exceeded expectations, we'll more than likely not make the play offs but the season can be seen as a success.

1st back at this level after 4 years in the wilderness, 3/4 of the season with no centre forward.
But failure to get promoted this season means we have created another unwanted record - the longest stretch ever of Sunderland being outside the top division. So I hope we do go up, even if it means next year is another 1977, 1991 or 2006.

Irrespective, we've had a great season. We're back.
If we recruit wisely in the summer and keep the core of the squad together, we will be amongst the press picks as a contender for promotion and rightly so.
I love how some people seem to think you can pick and choose when you get promoted.
I see this comment a lot and yet I don't think anyone has ever suggested it.

It's implied, if not explicit. Maybe it's better expressed that some say we don't want to go up in a particular season but would benefit from another season in the division we are in at the time.

I see nothing more the a defeat today at WBA. Two reasons. One being our massive injury list but mainly, I think our owners don't want us in the play offs. They think it's too soon. No matter how we've tried to fuck it up (Hull and Huddersfield at home), our nearest rivals have not taken advantage and here we are still in with a shout. TM will be told that we must lose this one.

It's a good job we're playing tomorrow then.

We aren't playing today don't be so stupid we get over 100 million if we go up what owners don't want to financially benefit

If you think this has been a great season you have a low bar.

You cannot possibly believe that the owners tell the manager he must lose?

If we think we should decline the opportunity to partake in games because we probably won’t win them then we should withdraw from every cup competition and forfeit playing in the league anarl.

Every game is an experience and should be tackled as such and welcomed.

Superlatives get thrown around too much but the sentiment is right. It has been a decent season, shouldn’t be described as great tho.

It has been a great season.
The quality of football has been good, the pressure hasn't been on the players as there hasn't been any idiotic unreal expectation and our final finishing position will be much higher than the owners and most realistic fans expected. We're headed in the right direction. We don't have a divine right to a top six spot or promotion just because we get big home crowds.

I'd call that great.

Making the play-offs and failing would be an awesome achievement far in excess of all expectations at the start of the season. Even more so with more than half a first team injured.
I agree and the positive experience of such an occasion for young players cannot be overstated Regardless of the result.

I’d call that decent in comparison to last 5 seasons. But then you have a low bar. Have some self respect and ambition.
