In Scottish years 36 is different to English 36. It's more like being mid 50s.

In England if somebody lives to 80, then they've lived about 70% of their life at 56.

Similarly if somebody in Scotland has a good innings and makes it to the age of 51, at 36 they've lived 70% of their life.
That's why the man in the picture looks like he's 20 years older.
he must have had a furlong paper round

An 8th of a mile seems like a relatively easy paper round.

It's just because he's Scottish.
