Mackies corner area



Yeah it’s an odd one. I can’t see what benefit it brought. Think it was there before JJB occupied it.

There was a furniture store there called Cantors - and there was cladding up then.
I am thinking it was late 70's /early 80's.

I think it was called "Wades" when it had a fire around 1982.
The cladding was up then mind.

The biggest issue is that the ground floor frontage has been wiped out, much like elephant tea rooms.


Some more info here. This claims it closed in 1981!


What is a shame is the 60s infill to the building opposite Mackies corner.

Great is some of these shop fronts could be restored some how

Dont remember a fire there
Fire at hardys in fawcett street in 1970s
Shares where mill garage around same time and scs in toward road all had fires
