Great to get that one over the line! At half time I couldn't really see it finishing 1-0 so our defensive second half performance does deserve plenty of credit, even if it wasn't very pretty at times. It's probably the first time though I've felt we couldn't have had many complaints if we only came away with a point.

Firstly, the team sheet was pretty exciting when you consider we had Neil, Embleton, McGeady and Pritchard all starting in midfield. For League One that's a really technically gifted bunch, plus of course Stewart often dropping in their too. You can add Hoffman and Doyle into the fold and we've got a really technical spine. It's good to see us actually trying to play to our strengths too, with some of the passing and movement a real joy for this level.

Onto the game itself and another big plus was seeing us on the front foot from the start, constantly pressuring their defence and goalkeeper as they attempted (and failed) to play out from the back. They seemed to be trying to draw us in and try and find space on the wings, but they executed it poorly mainly thanks to Stewart and Pritchard, and as the game went on we saw O'Nien pushed further up the pitch and his energy caused more problems. The biggest negative was that occasionally they did get some joy out wide and went close a couple of times.

Second half and we were largely second best, in terms of being on the front foot. They took the game to us like no other team have at our place so far and we had to dig really deep. It makes me wonder what they were playing at first half when they had little interest in pressing or pushing players forward bar the odd counter.

I'm largely satisfied with the way we're playing this season despite not being a big fan of the 4-2-3-1. One thing that we really need to work on though is getting more players closer to Stewart when Doyle attempts those long range cross field balls. We need someone overlapping as well as someone close by for the knock downs. There were some positive signs that Stewart and Pritchard might be able to link up with their movement and understanding. I'm also not convinced our balance was quite right in attacking midfield today, but it's the first time those three will have played together. Finally, with regards balance the full backs are getting it spot on at the moment. Cirkin in particular improves every game.

Player ratings

Hoffman - much more assured than his debut. A decent tip over and a couple of point blank stops, but very good with the ball at his feet and this is key if we want to play out from the back. 7

Winchester - assured defensively, good positionally in the sense he can overlap or cut inside into defensive midfield. He times his runs well and is generally good on the ball. His attitude and work rate are right up there with the best in our team, too. 8

Flanagan - he continues to excel alongside Doyle and silences the doubters week on week. He's strong, reads the game well and has become a bit of a rock for us this season. His distribution still isn't great but he's learning to take fewer risks and give the ball to the more able ball players. 7.

Doyle - he's strong and key for us, but is guilty of over doing it at times. A few times today he gave the ball away and put us under needless pressure. Still, that'll happen when you see so much of the ball like he did today. First half he had a whole half pitch of space to work with, second half it became more congested for him. He seemed to be getting frustrated with a lack of movement as the second half went on and eventually Dajaku started helping him out by providing an option with a diagonal run, and Neil and O'Nien also joined in. 6

Cirkin - as I said earlier, he just improves every passing week (at least in an attacking sense). His drives up the flank both with and without the ball are crucial to providing width and stretching play, and he shows pace, strength as well as technical ability to beat his man and put a dangerous ball in. Hopefully he's not missing too long as he's a really exciting player for us at the moment. Left back to right back for the goal says it all. 8

O'Nien - a warrior again today. He got involved much more I felt than often, and pushed much further up the pitch, almost into the 10 role at times. This left Neill deeper and I'm not sure that really suited him, but it meant O'Nien could pressurise them a lot more. The shithousery/gamesmanship at the end was shite though and I wish he'd cut it out. 7.

Neill - quiet for large parts today. They had no intention of coming out first half which didn't help him as the game was congested, but he seemed largely a passenger at times. But when he does get the ball he's got clear ability in making things happen - his vision and passing ability still opened Bolton up a few times. He also shifted into the 10 later on. 6.

McGeady - I was a bit unsure about him being on the right and Embleton on the left, but McGeady picked up on his last game and a half where he's been much improved. He had the better of the full back and helped get us into some dangerous positions, we just lacked that final ball or finish. His work rate continues to be very good, emphasised by a sprint and slide tackle towards the end. The second half didn't really suit him though, for obvious reasons. 6.

Pritchard - it'll be interesting to hear the thoughts of Pritchard's performance (mixed I assume). He's very busy and has lots of quality on the ball. If he's given time and space he'll thrive. He and Stewart also seemed to be on the same wavelength at times with their link up. That said, his goal threat is questionable and he definitely looks as though he'll be a creator rather than a goalscorer. Will it work with him, McGeady and Embleton playing together? Jury's out at the moment. 6.

Stewart - as I say, Pritchard looked a potential decent link up player with Stewart, but overall he was quieter than usual. Second half it was solely down to us being very deep and unable to really get out, but first half he went close on a couple of occasions, and he was absolutely everywhere with his movement. 6.

Subs

Dajaku - an odd debut from the young lad. Clearly raw, and I was disappointed he didn't seem to have much pace or a first touch. He's got flair and good movement though, and looked dangerous at times.

Huggins - bar one inexplicable clearance which nearly put them in, he did a really solid job in difficult circumstances. Looks like he's an able defender as well as decent technically and able to get forward. A good option.

Evans - clearly a very good player for this level and his experience will be key to us being successful I feel.

Wright - a couple of near brain farts butal also mostly did well in difficult circumstances.
Had to finish on a separate post for some reason.

Bolton - a really odd first half performance where they seemed intent on playing out from the back even though it wasn't working, with no real plan of what to do if they did beat the press. A few times they got down our wing in fairness, but they weren't up to much. Second half was a completely different story and they penned us back all half and looked to get in down our flanks. They would argue they were good for a point. Doyle caused problems but his finishing was poor, Afoloyan looked dangerous in patches too.

Referee - up and down really. He got a couple of decisions wrong and there were a couple of penalty shouts which I didn't see clearly, but nothing major to report from him really.
I've missed out Embleton, who wasn't at his best really. Out of position affecting him?

You give excellent reports that are a pleasure to read, but I would have scored 0'nien lower for his idiotic push on one of their players. Let the referee deal with the situation. Don't get involved and don't play into their hands

Some of his antics frustrate me. However, he put in a really good performance today and seemed happy to press further up the pitch.

I added a comment at the end @Safc88

Think it needs to be either Pritchard or Embleton unfortunately. I'd go for Embleton as he's more likely to score.

Really enjoyed the match mind. No problem with them coming at us. Made a good spectacle. They'll be there or there abouts when it matters.

Other than missing Embleton off, decent ratings for me.

Was talking to a Bolton fan after the game and he was impressed with us.

This, poor from Johnson, he's desperate to get Pritchard in Embletons position.

Hoffman - 7 ?
Clean sheet with a couple of saves, must do better 🙄

Decent/comfortable saves, did a good job.

If Gooch isn't playing I do wonder if we could play a more narrow 4-2-3-1 with the full backs offering the width and the three attacking midfielders quite central. This would also allow more bodies to be around Stewart.

Good point mate, not quite furious but Embleton should not not have been shunted out wide?

What did Hoffman do wrong to lose 30% of his rating? What could he have done better to get 8, 9, or 10? He only had to make one mistake for us to lose 2 points?

Pritchard was our weak link today imo. Would probably have him a mark behind the rest. Embleton definitely wasn’t as effective out wide either so it was a double whammy.

Players don't start at 10. They don't 'lose' 30%. Hoffman had a good steady game which was reflected with his 7 score.

To get a higher score he would have had to have done something more, such as make a few more important saves.

Afoloyan was motm I thought.
Do like Neill and Embleton, they’re good footballers, but they go missing for large periods. Pritchard… reminds me of the little welsh lad made of glass. All fart nee shite I reckon.
