M’Vila

At the back end of the season he was brilliant IMO, alongside Kirchhoff / Barry.

Gutted we never signed him, but I’ll not blame Moyes for that as he didn’t sign all summer even when Allardyce was in charge, shambles that we wouldn’t stump up the money for him but paid over double for N’Dong
Lee Barry Cattermole

In the context of Sunderland midfield players in my too many years watching us - he was superb!

If superb is top 2/3 out of absolutely hundreds of midfield players, then he was superb

Lee Clark was the best of the ones you list but he really really wasn’t as good as M’villa

Kevin Ball, that’s just stupid. All heart and very admirable but haway man he couldn’t lace the boots of the best midfield players we’ve had
His performances for a good spell weren't superb. Good players can have bad patches.

I liked him as a player he had all the attributes needed for a midfielder but I know at the time he came with a lot of baggage (he had an entourage ffs!) and I think that and the high strop factor potential made those in charge think twice, you could have just seen him down tools once Sam left like a lot of them did because Moyes was an absolute fraudster, he imo would have just been another Khazri, Lens or Kone bleeding the club dry, the atmosphere around the club changed the instant Moyes walked through the door I mean did ANY player perform anything like their potential under him? As for the Ndong signing that was just a fiasco that I don't know who was responsible for, unfortunately he will probably be our record signing for a long time

He was excellent for us, he didn’t even have a pre season, that’s why he tired by the end of the season, he was the reason Kirchoff looked like a world beater
Sorry mate but I can’t agree with this. Kirchhoff was brilliant in the second half of that season, probably our best player so to say M’Vila was the reason why is pretty disingenuous to Kirchhoff imo. They complemented each other very well though, I’ll agree with that.

All players can. The reality is we were awful in so many ways that season but when Allardyce made a few signings and tightened us up tactically it gave M’Villa a platform that he thrived on.
Not signing him and going for N’Donkey remains one of the worst transfer decisions I’ve ever seen.
We swapped a quality player for an absolute parcel of headless shite

I wouldn't agree.

Kevin Ball was obviously limited in terms of technique, but he was always in the match making a different sort of contribution. The game passed M'villa by in more than his fair share of going missing matches. Didn't really rate him. Not involved enough. The German lad mentioned was a much better footballer - he was always in the game making a contribution.

Mvillas best form imo was the 1st part of the season. 2nf half of the Season he wasn't as good but still played a part in a good functioning midfield 3

The midfiled 3 complemented each other. The work Mvilla and Catts put in either side of Kirchhoff was very important
