Lyndon Gooch

It’s the same with most of wingers/creative players. Either they’re world beaters in a game, taking on men, creating chances - or it doesn’t come off for them that match and they’re very poor, usually just losing possession and putting in poor crosses. Similar could be said for Mcgeady, Diamond and Jones last season.

I have a theory about Gooch.

Now and again he has a good game, he gets the plaudits and it seems to affect him. The next game (or several games) he seems to ignore all of the good advice he’s been given and revert to his natural game which seems to be head down trying to go around or through the opposition.

After several of these bad games the coaches manage to get in his ear and eventually he’ll have a decent game again and so it continues.

The result is his match average rating ends up being below 6 which isn’t really good enough.

He’s better when he’s got competition for his place.

I said on another thread Gooch is capable of worse, but there were a few times tonight when a first time ball was required to runners, but he took 3 or 4 touches by which time the chance had gone.

I can’t abide the lad at times, but he plays for my team so I support him. First half tonight was poor in my opinion. Second half he pulled wider took the ball in more space and made better decisions. Better player for me when he plays simple

The fact he can play full back kept him on the pitch tonight. On Gooch's display tonight and last Saturdays , Diamond must be close to a start (although he is inconsistent as well), his direct running would have served us better tonight as they played a high line.

Sure if he played for most other league 1 sides and quite a few in the championship he wouldn't be under the scrutiny he's going to be under here. The expectations for our supporters are very high. And that is to his disadvantage.
One great game in six, good enough in maybe in one or two others but he fizzes and splutters and he should at 26 be able to be far more authoritative. An edgy little twat, aggression's great but he gets too intense at times.
Needs to mature or try his luck somewhere else, somewhere outside his comfort zone perhaps?
Imho

You know if he’ll have a good or a bad game based on the first 3-4 minutes.

Does my head in when he goes into his ‘hero’ mode and has to be the one that tries to do absolutely everything to get a goal

standard Gooch really. capable of a playing a blinder every now and again but more often than not blows hot and cold. no real consistency is why he plays in league one

Scapegoat as usual. Thought he had a poor start but grew in to the game, got fouled a lot without the ref giving them, inconsistent delivery but still set up some very good chances, should have had an assist if Flanagan timed his run better. I'm not sure why people feel the need to pick someone out as being "awful" and "shite". We battered them, and should have been 3 or 4 up. They scored with a very good strike and looked organised and defended relatively well once going 1 up, but we still had chances.
