LVCC D1 - Middlesex v Durham

I don't think he's good enough. Rather see Borthwick open - he pretty much does anyway so drop Jennings and elevate the Badger.

Mind it must be said - we've been known to bat poorly in the third innings of a game on more than one occasion this season......
You where saying the same about Stoneman up till 18 months ago!

I think you're being harsh tbh. He averages just under 30 when he's playing half the games at CLS which isn't the best place for a young opening batsmen to learn their trade.

Rocky scored less runs iirc in the 2012 season and averaged lower than jennings

edit: stoneman in 2012 636 at 27.65 jennings in 2014 687 at 28.45

Mind it's worth noting rocky was the seond highest scorer in 2012

Sussex managed to find their feet a bit now lead by 21 341/7 at stumps

What's more - Lancashire have 12 overs left to get two wickets to gain a third bowling point. Be nice if Jordan and Zaidi (who's highest score is 202  and averages 36) can hang around.

129 ahead. Lancs wobbling against Sussex. Northampton at home next week. Think we're staying up.
Tbf sussex wobbled against lancs. Had them 192/8 and lancs got 320. And were 289/3 and ended up being 303-7.

But thankfully they've rallied and can hopefully put on a 100+ lead tomorrow.

Agree with the last point, drop him for who?

I'm not just saying this because he opened today, but couldn't mustard open, sometimes think he is more effective getting a hit early, rather than trying to rebuild innings etc, couldn't he better hitting the ball when it's at it's hardest

To be honest I'd maybe just drop him down the order - rather than drop him from the side. Its just something I've had in mind for a few weeks, today with Jenno was probably the trigger that made me come out with it. He's still only young, so I'm not advocating dropping him and forgetting about him at all. In truth its more to do with how good Borthwick has become and the runs hes scored. Again, hes regularly in early anyway so I gathered that opening wouldn't be much of a difference for him anyway.

As for Jenno - perhaps 4/5 - maybe he'd be better suited when the ball is a little older. Although I'm aware that Durham's 5/6 are regularly in withing the 20 over mark anyway .

Looks like you picked the wrong week to give up valium

What?

Kevin Hand is optimistic......

"Having been on the back foot for the majority of the first two days, Middlesex's ninth-wicket partnership not only helped save the follow-on, but also opened up the chance to turn the game around.

"Durham are heavy favourites but, with the weather set fair, and two full days to come, a draw is highly unlikely, so the hosts will hope that the 10.30 start will again bring some cheap early wickets.

Or you could take Rushie's view.

"There is still a little bit of seam movement in the pitch. It does look like it is going to spin at moment and tonight there were a couple of balls that kept a little low."

I'd be more inclined to listen to Rushy. Just wanted to share the comments of Hand - when I first read it I thought I'd seen a different scorecard because from his words you'd think Middlesex gained first innings parity

Hand is quite good and gives fair opinions. On the first morning he was critical of Middx bowling and not backing up Murtagh by bowling to short, and then suggested that Durham seam attack would be more effective as they would pitch the ball up which was spot on. Marty had a different take on the match and appeared more inclinded to bang on about Borthwick averaging over 200 against Middx and the Roker Riviera.

All about opinions.

People forget Jennings is just a young lad. He's a fantastic cricketer, very vocal in the field, and overall I think his progression has been very good indeed for such a young lad. We haven't got a wealth of options to open the batting or in fact replace anyone purely for batting purposes. He'll be the first to admit he should be doing better but it's all a learning curve and lessons like this game with the bat will benefit him in the longer term. Worth remembering he does the odd bit of bowling which at times has proven to be useful.

One thing about Jennings is that he is forever working hard to improve his game
