Luke 09

First of all I absolutley love Luke O'Nien.
He runs his socks off, put's his body on the line and clearly he appreciates playing for our club.

However... the fact is like the majority of our players and most of the players at this level, he is a bang average footballer.
Simple as that.

When we were playing AFC Wimbledon and McGeady was having a shocker of a first half, a few of the lads around us were shouting out for McGeady to be subbed and O'Nien to be put in a forward position.
Second half McGeady beats his man and rifles one into the top corner.

We need players like O'Nien at this level. But he won't cut the mustard should we go up.
We won't know unless he's tried. Who'd have thought Maja would have the goal tally he did after being bang average in the Championship.

Mumba should start.
This.

I'm really dissapointed on our use of molyneux Embleton mumba Robson and to an extent hume.
They all played a part in the wolves game end of last season and first game v Charlton.
I'd like to see us pushing our young uns more rather than loaning them out.

I would like to see O'Nien in Midfield, he's made the RB position his own but we didn't originally sign him to play RB. So there's obviously some quality he has in Midfield because if there wasn't Ross wouldn't of signed him, simple as. Yes he might need to work hard to keep up but a few years ago the lad was playing in the non league pyramid and look at him now. If anyone is going to work his arse off for us, it's O'Nien. Could inject some energy in the midfield, I personally would give him a chance

We should try and take the Wolves lad on loan at Coventry for the no 10 role next season. League on or Championship. Tore us and Pompey apart.

I think you're wrong, Honeyman disappears from games with alarming regularity. ONien by and large does not.

Sure. But the idea he is "clearly a better player" as the OP said cannot be proved and is silly tbh.

They are similar players and made similar goals and assists contributions last season - O'Nein slightly ahead. Except of course he was in a successful League Two side, whilst Honeyman was in a minging Championship one.

We haven't seen enough of O'Nein in midfield to make a judgement - his fairly decent efforts at right-back are neither here nor there. He didn't look great there earlier in the season imo, so I really don't know what basis the OP has for saying he is "clearly a better player" in his actual position.

I'd like to see Maguire there myself.

Very surprised he is in League One, they had high hopes for him. Certainly a Championship level player - and big too, which would help our team of midgets in this most physical of leagues.

Onien isn’t a better footballer than honeyman.

There’s a reason Ross plays anyone but him centre mid and that’s because he’s been chronic whenever he’s played there.

He has imho been superb at full back and all credit to JR for seeing his potential at playing there.

But here is my issue.......09 has a mental amount of energy, easily as much as Honeyman........09 however is clearly a much better footballer than Honeyman.

We are now in a position when we need to go hell for leather and create and score goals in our last 2 games

Given we have little to lose by trying something different then surely we have to give 09 an opportunity to show what he can do in his natural role in that attacking midfield.

But then who do we not play? If we are gonna play 5 in midfield which I suggest is our best formation then we probs need to go something like

Mclaughlin

Matthews
Flanagan
Ozturk
Oviedo (Hume)

McGeady
Cattermole
Leadbitter
McGuire
09

Wyke

In a

4-2-3-1 formation

Catts and Leadbitter sitting

McGeady, O9 and McGuire in a 3 behind Wyke

The three are fluid and interchangable and would cause absolute havoc playing off Wyke.
09 should have been played in the no 10 role months a go.

Honeyman for all his effort is not and never will be a no 10. Play him on the right - he did well there last season.

Molyneux is shite

That's not true though, he was rightly getting praised for coming on and doing well in midfield. Walsall, Shrewsbury and Doncaster stick out

No it is true. He’s not stood out at all in midfield that’s why he’s playing right back

If you want honeyman dropping then maguire is the obvious choice not our right back

I'm not sure O'Nien has shown he's a better footballer than Honeyman. O'Nien's job at full back is to be an athlete, which in the main he has done well.

If he was to play as a box to box type then he'd be okay as it again relies on good work rate, stamina and fitness. If you're playing a different central midfield or attacking midfield role and your main job is to make things happen on the ball, then that's a different ball game. Nobody really knows if O'Nien can do that yet.

There seems to be an acceptance amongst some that O'Nien is a good footballer. He may well be, but we haven't really seen that yet.

What 1 sub appearance 6 months ago?

No he hasn’t
No I've just gave you 3 occasions off the top of my head. He done well in midfield in those games.

He's done well in midfield before coming here in midfield hence us buying him. I'd give him a chance in midfield. I think he's earnt it through his performances at RB and because we're persisting with a totally ineffectual player in Honeyman

We know Honeyman isn't though.

He did no more than ok

Doncaster away he was no better than honeyman has been

You’re just making stuff up now

I would love to see O9 pushed further forward to see what he can do. Technically good and a careful passer of the ball.

That said, I can’t decide if it is a good time to give it a go, or whether tinkering with play offs looming, would be unsettling....If I was forced to decide, I would give it a go.
