30m isn't even a lot of money any more. We got three attacking players for that.....Palace have just shelled out more on one.

Those are our *star* signings,......10m. James Tomkins costs 10m.
I really don't know what you are expecting we aren't even close to being in a position to spend £30m on a player. That's as a direct result of wasting money on the £6m-£12m players we have been signing.
Palace also sold an attacking player for £25m and another for £10m.

To clarify I'm not expecting 30m signings, just providing context for what 30m gets you in reality if you spend it on 3 players.

I was expecting we'd sign M'Vila and Yedlin (10m for both, continuity an added bonus) and we haven't, I was expecting we'd go and get a couple of attacking options to supplement what we had for 10-15m (Sakho made sense when linked). That was before we sold one of our first teamers and the other went in a huff. In short I expected we'd keep the starting 11 from last year together as much as possible and add a couple of proven, decent, top flight players to it.

We've managed to do basically none of that. We've spent about 10m net on some bairns who aren't good enough. You can't tell me that's what any manager wants?

Give the lad a break. He was bought as back up and has been thrown in the deep end. He's one for the future and is clearly not ready yet.

He needs extensive coaching but I think he can turn into a good play. We 100% need a first choice RB though
True but you know they need a good scapegoat on here. Wonder how many of them had their posts ready before the match even kicked off

I take the point but it's a slightly unfair comparison as the £30m was spent before the new TV deal where it got you more.

I also expected that, certainly M'vila no idea what is going on there. It seemed a no brainier deal. The only thing that makes me think that might be more down to Kazan is that nobody else has stepped in.

If it's not what the manager wants why the hell is he signing them?

Same as his predecessors, because those are the ones the club will sanction.

Poyet explained it when we had a DofF. You give them a list of names/positions with players prioritized. They come back and say "you can't have options 1 or 2 for each but you can have option 3, or here are some other players...."

I'm guessing it's the same now only it's Bain giving the bad news and he doesn't even have other options to show.

Is that based on anything though? Who were the first choice names if we were prepared to spend £20m+ on two wide players last summer who weren't first choice? Then another £9m on one in January?
Of course the club will always have to say no to some deals that are out of our reach but judging by the players/fees we have approved the recruitment should have been better.

The DOF stuff does muddy the water somewhat I agree. Even that was a direct result of crap spending. Maybe a DOF would have said no to Danny Graham for example.

I must have watched a different match to you today because I though Papy was very good.
I agree with a lot of comments about Papy - he was as good as any of our team today. Impressed seeing he's only been here a short while.

It's not too early when he can't even do the basics. You can see it a mile off, he's not good enough and I'll eat my hat if he isn't loaned out to championship club within a year.
You may be right. We may as well give him a chance beforehand though. I don't envy the lad.

I see the Sunderland Echo has gave Love a rating of 6 - Got about the pitch well and did a decent job at right back.

He was poor but to be honest, I don't think he would have been any way near the first 11 if we had a fully fit squad and also made the signings we desperately need. If we don't look after him and get someone else in at right back, we could royally fuck his career up.

As someone said earlier. We finished last season in great form. But this team is missing Yedlin, Kaboul, Kone, Khazri, Cattermole, MVilla, Kirchoff and Borini. That's 8 players who started in the team that finished last season so well. It shouldn't be a shock we are playing shit given this team has never played before and our best players from last seasons run in are either a) sold b) injured or c) not bought for pennies after loans ending.

Oh, and Love is on a par (maybe worse) than Gareth Hall. His efforts chasing back after being caught miles out of position were pathetic. That's not to do with being young or inexperienced. That's just utter laziness and to me is unforgivable at any level for any player.
