There seems to be a lot of interest in these kind of mystery disappearances at the moment on here and in general. They seem to have become a popular topic for documentaries.

Has anyone read about this case? I’m not a wesleuth but read an article on it in one of the papers and it’s tragic and fascinating.

2 Dutch girls that were staying in Panama and decided one day to take a hike along a tourist trail with the hostel dog. The dog returned on its own many hours later but they were never seen again. Parts of their human remains were found months later.

Official Panama investigation is closed and that they died in an accident. There is not much evidence to prove anything but a couple of showstoppers. They found their phones which showed they tried to call emergency help for up to 11 days later intermittently but couldn’t get a signal. There are also unclear and haunting photos taken in the early hours of the morning 11 days after they went missing on one of their phones suggesting they were still alive.

But When their bag was found weeks later it was dry and the stuff packed inside suggesting it hadn’t been out in the jungle for a long time. Their was a huge search for the vast majority of time they were missing and the phone evidence suggests still alive but it inexplicably failed to find them. The final 77 attempts to unlock their phones were unsuccessful suggesting they either forgot the code or someone else tried to. And most unexplainable of all scientists said the few bones they found were fully decomposed and had been bleached with phosphorus which was impossible for them to be bleached that quickly naturally and the chemicals suggested foul play.

It’s quite a chilling case

Link to a documentary?

The guide is a person of interest 👀

Havent watched it yet but there was some questions around him. Apparently went into the girls rooms early the the next morning before the police arrived.

The whole thing with the hostel is strange. They turned up as planned to do volunteering but were told they weren’t needed for a week. Also some questions if it’s true as said that the dog actually left with them as it is not in any photos and some doubt it would have made its way back 4 hours hiking on its own.

But the photos on the phone suggest they were alive 11 days later, indeed the back of the head of one of the girls is in one photo. So unlikely if the guide was involved they would still be alive by then as a massive search effort by that point and they would have had to go back and fake the photos.

Read a bit on this, its not that mysterious like, they were walking around lost in the jungle in the pitch black

just a tragic accident that one

Really? The vast majority of investigators on both the Dutch and Panama side suspected foul play.

Probably not the best choice to hike the route but some things just can’t be explained. Ie how their remains were found upstream of their bag which was in a pristine condition despite 10 weeks in the jungle. Or why one had bleached bones and phosphorus on them only 10 weeks later. And the most bizarre the deletion and inability to retrieve one photo which after testing you couldn’t do on the camera alone.

It’s one of those where 90% of evidence suggests it could have been a tragic accident but there is 10% which are complete showstoppers if that was the case.

Only conspiracy theorists mate

everything was explained, more than likely fell and hurt

I’ve been to a similar place in Panama and you’re fucked if that happens

only got any attention because of the photos, which are spooky n sad but just people using flash for light

How did one have her foot cut off with a "clean cut"? I assume this means with some kind of blade.
Perhaps one of them found themselves in position like that dude who got trapped between rocks did (who had to chop his hand off iirc). Maybe she slipped, rocks fell off and trapped her foot (and she wasn't able to move the massive boulder etc?). She may have freed herself, dragged her body as far as she could then succumbed to blood loss / the elements or both.

I don't really see too much mystery with this one tbh. girls get lost, hungry and thirsty, may have fallen, may have drank river water which would make them ill. died, flood season comes and moves things around and breaks up decaying bodies.

Much like the elevator footage is all that gives the Elisa Lam story interest, the photos on their camera add an element of something unusual and tug on the heartstrings as you are seeing moments before they die, and we know what is about to happen, and they didn't
