Looking Ahead. December, Jan and Feb.

For me it’s time the gov just dealt in facts. Tell the public what’s going on, what the risks are and then let us get on with it.

If you want to wear a mask when you go out then wear it. Don’t want to socialise in big groups then don’t do it. Want to social distance, then do it. Want to have the vaccine, have it. Don’t want the booster, don’t have it.

No other part of our life is micro managed by the government this way. The variant cycle is never ending, if that’s the case how do we ever get out of covid? This needs to end now. Let people make their own decisions and get on with our lives. Everything is a risk and covid is now just another risk on the list.
Life is a contact sport and precious because it’s finite.

I’m not saying just crack in, happy to wear a mask, wfh and make other adjustments but if they shut the schools for instance I’d be mightily pissed off tbh.

Data comes out saying Omicron more or less same as rest but more transmissible. Govt make masks mandatory & there's increasing bother as not everyone does it.

Feb gets here & rates drop. And repeat. Variants come & go and accepted normal death rate goes up. People crack on with annual vax.

Here to stay I think folks.

Reaction if China spawns another one might be another matter...

Javid has pretty much said that if omicron is more or less the same as delta in terms of hospitalisations & deaths, then the mask rules will be dropped

The public don't want a lockdown and it would be hated so not sure why a politician obsessed with popularity would do one unless absolutely necessary.

I'm not sure about the 'public not wanting a lockdown'. Always pretty well supported on the opinion polls.

What we know now is the only type of restriction that has any meaningful impact on numbers is a full lockdown with shops and pubs closed and everyone home working.

Where I live we had local lockdown for the whole pandemic and it made very little difference to the numbers.

There is no appetite for full lockdown from the public or government. I doubt labour would back it either

Depends who conducted them I guess, and who they ask. Don't think I know a single person who wants more restrictions. Not at the moment anyway.
Of course there will be some people, just not a majority for me.

Covid is here for ever, have to live with it.

I don't think many want a full lockdown, but just going by some of the comments on here, I reckon there's a lot who'd quite welcome a return to social distancing with stadiums & nightclubs shut, and pubs restricted

They must find some very weird people to do these opinion polls. Not one person I know wants another lockdown.
It's an odd one. When I speak to people here in the NE I rarely find any appetite for further lockdowns but I work with quite a number of people around the country and it seems to be the opposite when I speak to them, i.e. they usually support the idea of a lockdown whenever the figures go up. Not sure why this is.
They never admit it but its all about them. They pretend it's altruism and care for others but it's almost always self interest.
How do those things benefit people?

Because they want their own fears to be completely alleviated and the things that are affected by social distancing aren't any detriment to their life.

Of course the people who would want stadiums, nightclubs, pubs and restaurants shut are typically the ones who don't use them so it wouldn't affect them personally.

I note that Labour have called for more restrictions but haven't (yet) said that hospitality should close as they know how unpopular it would be and damaging to the economy,

Im not sure why this is surprising. Everything about Covid is self interest.

Bear a mind a lot of younger people even during the peak wanted to open up so they could live their lives knowing it was causing a health crisis in the elderly before vaccines

And a lot of elderly will evidently be self interested in only their own health and not really give a fuck about things they don’t use being closed if it limits their risk

Can’t blame either side for being self interested, it’s been the case throughout Covid for everyone and is a symptom of wider Uk society these days
