Living in Lisbon

I'm moving to Lisbon next year and have to start planning it all. IIRC a few of our posters live/have lived there and was hoping to tap into some of their experiences.

I've narrowed it down to 2 likely neighbourhoods; Bairro Alto and Principe Real. Anyone got experience of what it would be like living there?

I would avoid Bairro Alto unless you like having lots of noise at night, definitely a district where most of Lisbon's nightlife exists. Príncipe Real will be quieter but still in a convenient location.

It's a lovely city to live in where ever you end up.
Good point that. I did wonder what the impact of noise would be given it's the place where the best nightlife is.

I'm going over for a couple of weeks in September to have a look around - will have a look at the place at night and see what it's like.

Principe Real was probably our preferred choice anyway because of the restaurants.

Nothing useful to add, just wanted to say I’m very jealous!

As mentioned above, Bairro Alto is lively, so maybe somewhere to visit on a night rather than live!

Do you speak Portuguese or have you managed to find work with English as preferred language.

Good idea to have a proper look around and get the feel of the area. It is quite hilly in that area, not necessarily a problem obviously, but is worth bearing in mind.

If you're going to have a car, then it might be worth investigating some areas in the suburbs. When I lived there I was down the coast towards Cascais, but I didn't spend much time working in the city itself. If you won't have a car, Real is well served by the metro, buses and trams.

May I come visit?

I work with a multi-national and they all speak English internally so no issue there. However, I'm about to start learning Portuguese as I'd like to get by while I'm there. It's only right if I'm going to be living in their country.

I don't drive ATM and have never really been interested. I'm reconsidering that now though, given the places we can take trips to over there. Was tempted to get a Tesla but in reality I probably would just hire car when needed.

Cascais did look appealing mind

Bairro Alto? Be like moving to London and trying to find a flat in Leicester Square.

Lisbon's mint mind, I've just booked up to go again in September.

Aye, seems like I've overlooked the fact tourists actually go to Lisbon

I will also be there in September. I will find you and buy you a pint

We've stayed in Lisbon a lot and Bairro Alto is bouncing most nights.
Lisbon 5-9 then Porto 9-12.
Much prefer Porto to Lisbon.
