Liverpool threaten breakaway from Premier League's TV rights deal

The fact that the collective bargaining requires 14/20 teams to agree means liverpool can jump up and down all it wants.

After newcastle I hate this lot more!!!

No threat of a breakaway there.

They just want to re-negotiate their share of the international rights.

Sounds reasonable to me.

The big clubs already get more anyway as they are on TV more.

Anything which increases the chances of the top six f***ing off and leaving the rest of us with a chance of winning something is a good thing in my eyes.

It's all about 'selling the product', and nothing to do with the game. So it goes.

Liverpools' success in the 80's is all they have. That history is why they still see themselves as a top four club or a club that internationally has such a fanbase. Smacks of clutching at straws to me, as their history is fast becoming just that. A bit like the mags under Keegan, Leeds under Revie and alas, SAFC, The bank of England Club.

Desperately tryimg to claw more moey into the club to satisfy the greed of the latest owners and probably a step closer to an exclusive European League. Sooner they all fuck off the better.

Funny how they pipe up now Champions league football is missing from their balance sheet!

Even if they do form a break away European league. Surely it would be the top for sides from each league? Not just sides with history?

I can see their point.

Before Sky, football was all about bums on seats and those with more fans had bigger crowds and more money. Search the posts here and you will find countless claims about why we should be classed as a big club, due to the size of our fan base. Certainly if you look at us against Wigan or Blackburn, I'd say every Sunderland fan would say we should be bigger and better than a tin-pot club with 18,000 crowds.

However, now for the majority of Premier League games, the number of fans actually at the ground are in the minority. My dad goes to Goa each year and the PL is huge over there. Every game is screened, repeated a number of times and analysis of every touch of the ball. Fans out there are not trying to buy QPR or Wigan, they are buying Liverpool and Man U. Why should they not get the lion's share of the cash? It is them generating the income.

The worrying thing is it then puts the income each club has at the mercy of TV bosses. They feed the world, tell them which games to watch and those teams get the cash. Take the screening of our games for example. I still can not understand why only one game was scheduled to be screened after our season last season.

With the financial fair play rules coming in, TV income is legit. Those who have a stronghold at the minute will only get stronger. Those without are unlikely to ever reach those heights. Even hoping for a rich sugar daddy will be out the window.

Let them form a breakaway league I say.

And if it happens, will they be screaming to let Barcelona, Real Madrid and Man United take whatever cut they can negotiate? Will they hell.

I can see what they want - that's blatant, but it's not for the good of football.

And this push came from a rather desperate club, rather than one of the big-hitters so maybe that's telling.

Liverpool the new Public Enemy No. 1. Hope Utd stuff them on Saturday

If it happens, that will be another nail in the coffin for football as a competitive sport.

Interesting that Liverpool seem to be whining about it rather than manyoo. I 'd have thought that as a brand manyoo are worth far more than Liverpool and would probably dwarf them income wise when it comes to selling individual TV rights.......

Fergie was hinting at it in a interview he gave to local telly that was posted on here last week

The clubs that will benfit from this happening would have discussed it all behind closed doors i would have guessed

See what is the best strategy to go about getting what they want

Let them fuck off and play in a four man league and see if the world wants to watch them then

Thats what I was thinking. If the top 4 or 5 want to get greedy and take all the money profits for themselves so nobody can catch them then the rest should just form a breakaway league and let them have their 5 man Premiership. Fuck em.

It's bad enough having the top teams on tv every f***ing week, and then taking up ALL the time on the highlight shows as well (as well as an hour punditry for each)

They've overspent on some average players (at best) and are now crying for more money. They should try supporting a team like ours where we get fuck all and are never on the tv for the better payments even.

if liverpool do this, man utd will follow suit and simply blow everyone out of the water

I wonder what shankly would have made of this

This is desperate, desperate stuff from liverpool. Now that they are shit and no longer competing at the top table in the premiership they think that they can some how barge there way in by cutting off the cash supplies to everyone else

36 posts to date and you appear to be in a minority of one.................

Of course it would be the start of a breakaway as the rich try to get richer saying fuck the rest of you.

Under the current set up the voting majority required means its a non starter anyway...

and finally its laid bare to those that were naive to think all these rich investors buying football clubs were doing it for the love of the game and were happy to pump millions and incur losses after losses each year.
