When did they stop using those big red spot lights that where on the roof of the SOL and Why, anyone know?

We have had white spot lights and green lasers on the SOL roof...neither of them are used these days which is a shame.

cost cutting, clearly not considered when they named the stadium. was good but attracted vandalism from environmentalists

They were put there to attract a saviour (batman stylee) ... Saviour turned up in form of God (aka Quinny) ... lights thus turned off as no longer needed.

yeah im sure there was red lights on the top reflecting onto the poles that go round the top of the concourse so they looked like red and white stripes?

Too many planes landing on Wessington Way;)

intersesting that as one thing might be that if a plane is flying over and it is illegal to shine a torch at a plane or helicopter, and this would be doing exactly that, because eventually a plane will goes through the beam. And also as far as expenses go what is a couple hundred quid electric bill to a football club. nothing.

The SAS (Sunderland Astronomical Society) lodged a complaint with the local council last April. The back light from the SOL was hampering their attempts at long exposure photography of planets out side the solar system. The council agreed and the lights can only be used during the day or at mid week games with cloudy skies.

Aye that's what I heard too:confused:

I did think it was a needless waste and light pollution source.

That is a typical council comment though. You can use them during the day. A bit like saying you can only use the pitch sprinklers when it is raining.

I heard Batman kept turning up and because it was a false alarm the call out charges were horrendous.
