Let's discuss the Monarchy

I dont think that now is the time to discuss the relevance of monarchy in 21st century, or even the suitability of Charles (and Camilla) to fulfil the role. Plenty of time after the funeral for that.

I'll be honest, I don't want a King or Queen. I don’t want to fund it and would rather see me taxes go elsewhere. I can't get my head around why have people living in poverty despite being one of the richest nations in the world, yet these privileged people become instant millionaires because they were related to William the Conquer. However, I would never dance on the grave of someone who has carried out the duty and service that was given to them without asking and I have a lot of respectfor the Queen as a person. I haven't commented anywhere else and won't say anything else publicly out of respect.
It's a good post mate and it probably would have broadly described my views to a tee up until a few days ago. However having seen the worldwide reaction to her passing I've got a better understanding now as to the extent of the soft power our Royal Family exert on the nation's behalf around the world. Whether that was attributable to her as an individual or to the position remains to be seen over the next decade or so I guess.

With regards to the funding I think they're probably a net contributor to the economy and even if not doesn't it work out at around 90p per person per year of our taxes that goes to maintaining them? We've probably given significantly more to Matt Hancock's landlord and that ilk over the last couple of years.

I may just be getting swept up in it all and may revert to my pre Thursday views in time but I've seen a different perspective these last few days.

You're both well out of line here. Don't judge an entire nation by one twitter tag ffs.

Why don't you look up the very respectful coverage across all the major Irish media, the Irish Times, Irish Independent, RTE.ie etc rather than looking at the comments of a few online clowns? The Queen was very well respected here, particularly after her visit to the Republic.
You can add Mary Lou McDonald and Michelle O'Neill to the list of those being gracious in their achnowledgements.

Well not really. Charlie is being appointed today, surely there is no better time to discuss it?
would have been better to discuss it before he was appointed, but the powers that be have decreed that we all go into mass mourning till whenever. Reminds me of that song in Evita "oh what a circus"

I think she has for the most part been a wonderful ambassador for the UK on the world stage, and God only knows how badly we've needed that in recent years, however I don't think that a monarchy has any place at all in a modern society.
Mate, how can you say she has been a wonderful ambassador, and we have badly needed her in recent years, and in the same paragraph say that there is no place for the Monarchy?
That just doesn't make sense mate.

A 96 year old lady who was a mother a grandmother and great grandmother has died. That’s sad in any circumstances and shouldn’t be disrespected.
The monarchy is a ridiculous out of date institution and we should take this opportunity to end it and stop all funding from tax payers. None of them will starve and we can move on to a more modern democracy and start to mend some of the divides in the UK.
Wife and I been on holiday all week but today she's gone back to being a nurse in a department missing over 50% staff and ill be back on Monday helping people with food bank parcels and electricity metres. The world has stopped apparently but the prices, energy metres and empty cupboards haven't.

But thank Goodness for the self elected elite preserving the Queen's genuinley remarkable example of service and humility, not by keeping calm and carrying on and caring for others, but instead policing whether people have sufficient respect in their comments or not, even going so far as reaching out to their employer if found wanting. Mourning their very genuine and not at all dramatised feelings on that traditional place of grief, the Internet. I believe its what Her Majesty would have wanted.

You are, get a grip ;)

I'm not an out an out republican and don't despise the monarchy. Outside of the senior Royals however there are a lot of very privileged people living very comfortable lives. Maybe I'm being short sighted and don't give these people credit for charitable work they do but that's probably because nobody has actually told me. The Duke of Westminster is an example. A 30 odd year old worth ÂŁ10 billion and owns most of the affluent buildings in London, handed to him on a plate. That 90p becomes a lot of money when it's added together and could be put to very good use elsewhere, especially when the Duke of Westminster is capable of contributing a lot more than that.

I am sure I have mentioned on here in the past, sadly the SMB isn't widely read in the gentlemen clubs around Whitehall

The faux grief probably is

An elected head of state through democratic electrics like most other so called democratic nations?
And then you can spend the whole time that they are in position, bitching that you didn't get the President you wanted, claiming a Tory stitch up, jobs for the boys, and every one who voted for them are thickies.
Sounds great that mind.🙄

But we'll save all that money because we won't be paying for a royal head of state (or something like that)
🤷
