Let's discuss the Monarchy

JFK was a serial adulterer.
Maradonna was a complete twat.
Mandella put petrol filled tyres around peoples necks
Churchill was a racist alcoholic

Didn't stop any of them being absolutely brilliant at what they did, and still in peoples minds as some of the greats of the 20th century.
When did Mandela put petrol filled tyres roumd peoples necks?
25m peak audience figure yesterday , i would have expected more frankly , dianas funeral got 32 m and that was when our population was 10m lower

is this a sign we are slowly falling out of love with royalty , i can only hope so
Can't be true I was told numerous times yesterday over half the entire world population watched the funeral.

And what benefit would that provide in real monetary terms, other than to satisfy the lust generated by jealousy of their fortunate position?
To how many homeless would the government of the day give anything like a substantial sum?
Would they say"here you go homeless man, your government has sold a Royal house and there's a life changing sum for you"?
Would they fuck, whatever party they were.
It would disappear in to the black hole of Westminster, never to be seen again, and Mr. Homeless man would still be sleeping under a bridge on the banks of a river in Brum, Newcastle, Sunderland, London, Bristol, Cardiff, Glagow or wherever.
Real world marra. Never a comfortable place to acknowledge, but not The Royal Families fault.
It's not just about money. Messaging is also important.
Many of the population have been hammered over the last ten years and more through austerity. We're all in this together we were told. Everyone has to tighten their belts in order for the country to get out of the mess it was in.
Well if those at the very pinnacle of society had also tightened their belts just a tiny bit then that would have sent a great message to us the great unwashed that they actually had some appreciation of what ordinary life is like. Its this sort of failure which will be their undoing imo.

Would you say the same about the money the government spends on foreign aid, or spends looking after asylum seekers, or spends on MPs expenses ?

About 250 years ago Thomas Jefferson penned the phrase "all men are created equal" (OK its sexist, and the all men bit only applied if you were of a certain race), but it was a start, and its an ideal which I certainly embrace, and hope that the vast majority of people do also, regardless of their political views.

I therefor find it embarrassing that we as a democracy disregard this most basic of ideals, and appoint one of the most privileged and wealthy individuals in the world to be our head of state, it smacks of elitism, surely something we should have moved away from generations ago. The monarchy is a completely out dated institution, lets move forward.

What song did the pipers play between the palace and the abbey?

Feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to work down there the past week. I did 17 hours though on Sunday night (started 1630 and finished 0930) and was on call for a couple of hours last night so meant I didn’t get to watch the full thing live.

3 different things there.

So as I have proven clearly to answer straightforwardly (an example many on here could follow), lets take them one at a time. Before I do though, I would just like to say that questions about how the Government spend money, has got jack shit to do with the Royalty.

That being clear, as you are obviously interested in my own political answers (God knows why), here goes

1.Money the Government spend on Foreign Aid should be ring fenced, because if it was deemed important at the outset, it is probably still important now. Can't fuck with that. If countries need it, and we decided we have it, we should give it.

2.I don't ever want this country not to be a safe haven for people that need sanctuary. Nobody should live in fear of their lives, and we are now, and have always been, a nation of immigrants, regardless of what people think. That is fact. If that means that we end up with some people taking advantage and milking our system, then so be it. We give refuge to people that need it. Full Stop.

3 Mp's expenses are for Parliament to sort out. Maybe an independent body to regulate the pigs at the trough, because clearly the pigs themselves won't do it.

Hope thats all ok.
Sure you'll find something wrong with it, but let me know either way eh?

So good I have watched again. :)

"Stinking Kevin!"

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others".

Animal Farm is my only reference point mate.
Was it taken from somewhere else?

If you are talking about the Stinking Kevin quote, I have not the foggiest marra.

I reckon by this time next year support for the monarchy will be around or even below 50% with support for a republic at about 35%.
Latest polling - 54% positive on monarchy -35% negative. Not quite the same as support for a republic but I stand by my forecast above.
The new King bounce has more than gone. He might get a bit of a bounce with the coronation but then again with the cost of living a bloke who avoids tax being ferried about in a gold carriage may just go the other way!

Take away the extra days off work, and you'd see a very different picture. Its literal bribery.
