Let’s clear something up about the striker situation

This idea that any old striker will do is nonsense isn’t it. Was like playing with 10 men with these you mention. We’ve missed OUR strikers this year, not A striker
The last (and possibly only) time we've had four good strikers was Phillips, Quinn, Dichio and Bridges over 20 years ago. Are these people only remembering that period? Have to be because I've no clue where the idea of "we must have 4 of our own strikers" comes from.

Earlier in the season we were playing with stewart and simms up front. 2 strikers . So therefore we need cover for 2 so we need 4 . 3 at an absolute push. It’s not being back in the dark ages and please don’t bang on like it’s rocket science with this false 9 crap . WE NEED 4 STRIKERS AT THE CLUB. We played about 6 games with none and it was a joke. We would have easily been in play off spot had we actually had back up. Yes speakman you have recruited in general very well but please sort the f***ing striker situation out once and for all and please don’t insult peoples intelligence by talking about how dajaku could play there. He’s shite .
The capitals did it for me

Because Speakman knew Everton would recall Simms and Stewart would get injured.

Strikers are by far the hardest position to fill with our model because decent ones are both rare and expensive. We could just break the model and sign someone like Gyan who would be totally loyal and never leave at the drop of a hat.

By the way which three extra ones do YOU think we should sign tomorrow? Its not like buying three t shirts for your holidays. They are just not available at the right price.

We started the season with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Simms on the bench as cover for Stewart, who had just gone a full season without injury.

Having one first choice and a good quality back up is the basis for a good squad.

Only the manager in the Bristol City game decided to change formation and go 2 up top and it worked. The recruitment team did try and get cover before the window shut but it’s hard to get quality at short notice. Remember that if the right player was not available and they just brought in any old player just to make up the numbers, we would potentially not be able to bring in the right player when they did come available.

Let’s face it with Amad and Roberts playing so well, even if Stewart and Simms were here and fit now only one of them would start.

We had Bent, Gyan, Welbeck and Waghorn for a period. Which is a similar level of skill, if not variety, of the 4 you mention.

A number of local journalists have talked about Speakman and Harvey choosing to risk Amad being able to play cf rather than go down the list of cfs. So the choice is 3rd inferior cf or Amad. Losing both Stewart and Simms may have made the former option look better than it probably was

Pretty sure Waghorn left as we got Gyan and never scored for us. If he did I can't remember it. It still makes no sense having four atm and it's not realistic to be bringing in that many all at once as the op reckons is what must happen.

Yes. And this dates back to the day that playing 2 up front was the norm. These days a 'lone striker' is more common, and I reckon 4-2-3-1 has been our most used formation of late. Also, Bridges wasn't happy and didn't really flourish in that period because of limited game time.

So what everyone is suggesting then is we need 2 Stewart style forwards and 1, let's say Broadhead in l1 type forward who can play in the Stewart position but also in the 3 behind.

I think we thought amad could, but he can't. He is however exceptional in the three behind positions. Now it's possible this new leeds kid can. But we still need at least one other stewart style striker ( simms for example)

Edit: the thing about bridges was he was a young striker coming through. He was just a brilliant one. Even then we really only had 3 professional strikers. The fact we're missing the young striker coming through is the biggest issue imo

For all the argument about how many we need now there is an underlying problem that needs to be addressed. Under normal circumstances and in most other club the 4/5/6 forward positions (bench and reserves) would generally be filled by promising kids. We seem to not have any younger forwards that the coaching staff think are ready even for the bench. That needs to be addressed to avoid kicking the can further down the road.
