Lesser known facts about Sunderland and its people



Sunderland born naturalist Abel Chapman saved the Spanish Ibex from extinction.
William Herschel, who discovered Uranus and infrared radiation, lived for two years in the Sunniside area of Sunderland where he composed six symphonies.

The stained glass referred to at St Peter's are fragments found in the 70's iirc, they are on display in the Glass Centre & the museum in the town, similar fragments were also found at Jarrow & they've recreated a round window with them. The ones at St Peter's pre date them. The windows at St Peter's arn't from the 7th century as is most of the church, only a small part is 7th century

That is quite a feat really.
Didn't the existing ones in St Peter's get smashed by vandals in the late 70's or early 80's. I'm sure they were being lorded then as the oldest stained glass windows in the country even though they weren't the originals
Elvis on his way from Prestwick airport Scotland to Germany looked down from the plane and commented as he passed over Sunderland "Is that Roker Park".

And 10 minutes before that flying over SJP he asked Colonel Tom Parker to open the aircraft door with the words “Hey Tom, open the door will you, need to take a shit uuuhh”
