I was invited to contribute to "making history" on radio 4 a (fair) while back on English stained glass. They just wanted a northerner to ask some questions I think.
some of these have a very tenuous connection to Sunderland... some bloke on a ship has the surname Sunderland some bloke once sailed on a ship made in Sunderland
And she appeals to the no hopers nowNicola Sturgeon’s family were ryhopers
Aye, none at all. I just asked them a question about the monkwearmouth/jarra connection. A producer emailed me & asked if I'd be willing record some stuff for broadcast. Please tell me you have no knowledge or interest in ancient stained glass or churches. It would make that interview so much better.
Oldest stain glass window in the world
Lawrence of SunderlandLawrence of Arabia was half Mackem.... his mam was from Sunderland
The craftsmen were from France, brought over by Bede, so I think they may have done some stained glass windows somewhere else beforeOldest stain glass window in the world
Extraordinary stat, have you got a link or something to cite?Sunderland is the only club to win a trophy during the reign of every monarch since league & cup football began.
And Peter O'Toole who famously played Lawrence of Arabia was a Sunderland fan after his dad spent time working here.Lawrence of Arabia was half Mackem.... his mam was from Sunderland
Joseph Conrad, who wrote Heart of Darkness on which Apocalypse now is based on, sailed on the Sunderland built Torrens.

Are their windows still about though? The craftsmen were from France, brought over by Bede, so I think they may have done some stained glass windows somewhere else before
Great shout mate. Earlier glass has been found but it was brought over by the Romans. Biscop brought glaziers from Gaul to wearmouth to show us the trade. Hence the location of the national glass centre.1st stained glass windows in the UK at St Peter's 675AD iirc
The stained glass referred to at St Peter's are fragments found in the 70's iirc, they are on display in the Glass Centre & the museum in the town, similar fragments were also found at Jarrow & they've recreated a round window with them. The ones at St Peter's pre date them. The windows at St Peter's arn't from the 7th century as is most of the church, only a small part is 7th centuryAre their windows still about though?
If not then century. up here is the oldest
That is quite a feat really.Great shout mate. Earlier glass has been found but it was brought over by the Romans. Biscop brought glaziers from Gaul to wearmouth to show us the trade. Hence the location of the national glass centre.
Additionally, the fact that Benedict biscop travelled from wearmouth to Rome four times before dying in France on his fifth trip is an amazing fact in my opinion
We’d better either stay down here or get good sharpish cos I can’t see wingnut lasting as long as his ma.Sunderland is the only club to win a trophy during the reign of every monarch since league & cup football began.
