Le Saux gay taunts article.

What makes you think it's false? What a ludicrous position to take.

And no one on this thread has mentioned football fans. The debate is about players.

It's just the whiter than white high morals brigade marra. Thee "ee well I've never called anybody this that or the other or even been the slightest bit amused by anything of the sort". I find it very hard to believe. Neebody's perfect.

There's questions there about calling straight people puffs, calling gay people puffs, and what people actually mean by all of this, and I think it'd be worth exploring. But oh no, no we can't have any of that. You don't say those things. You're obviously homophobic. You're prejudiced. You're an idiot. You don't belong in the 21st Century. Then why don't you post about the article, rather than posting about the people who've posted about the article? You can at least that they're entitled to an opinion on it, yes? What you seemed to be saying in your earlier post is that any opinion that differs from yours is a lie. Maybe some people liked the article. Maybe some people like Le Saux's stance on this issue. Do you not recognise that as a possibility?

I tried to. There was backlash. The thread moved on.

Where? 'Cos that wasn't what I was saying at all.

Fair enough to them. I myself just didn't buy it. But because of that I'm a 'dummy'? They're the silly buggers that couldn't accept that somebody else might have an opinion on the article mate.

The Le Saux article (iirc it's actually an extract from his autobiography) is an account of someone who had a career of homophobic abuse. Viewed within that context (and within the context of Fowler's lack of contrition right up to his own autobiography) is becomes unacceptable. Mind, finding the Fowler thing funny doesn't make you Hitler - I'm fairly sure I would've laughed at the time.

I agree that "homophobic" language can be used between friends (or whatever) and be funny / harmless etc. But the debate here is about Le Saux's sustained experience of it, and what that might mean within the bigger picture.

'Puff' is thrown about on here every day and it doesn't seem to ruffle any feathers.

How so? Is he a "prick" for not accepting homophobic abuse aimed at him?

I'd just read his Ince comments as I posted that. He admits himself he handled it badly. He was a nasty little bastard himself on the pitch, and I never liked him, and in that little episode he practically admits he could be a nasty little bastard.

Fair enough, didn't spot that. Didn't agree with the pelters kingbant got either fwiw - he was just being honest.

Fair enough. In the context of what he was going through it is far more justifiable though.

Well no, I'm not sure if a gay player would get a load of abuse.

I think the thing is, straight men don't like being called 'puffs'. It's an attack on their masculinity, ego, and whatever else. 'Out' gay men seem happy with their own sexuality, as do the general public, and I don't think abuse would be accepted.

I think with 'abuse' Le Saux got, it was pretty much accepted because people actually knew he wasn't gay.

Is it acceptable to be using homosexuality as an insult towards straight men? Probably not, but it's happens, innocently enough, on a daily basis. Thing is, I think there's a difference as well between an insult and a taunt. A lot of it's not meant as a slur.

Agreed with this and Le Saux clearly hasnt helped himself.

Sounds like people hadnt realised how much of an effect it has had on Le Saux at the time.

I do wonder what would have happened if Le Saux, knowing he would be embarrassed across world television just snapped and thought 'fuck it'. The footage would then have been of Graham taking up the offer and dry-humping Robbie up and down the pitch using his ears as leverage. Fowler's monkey face all red and furious that his joke backfired. It wouldn't have happened again.

have you often wondered about this?

Mate, there's something seriously wrong with being a paedophile, which is why that would be upsetting to everyone. And why it is nothing like being called gay.
In the 70s and 80s a lot of people would have very wrongly thought of gay people the same way unfortunately

Tempted to stop reading here mind... Are they having a laugh??
Do you always stop reading at point in book or a text when you come to something you disagree with?

If I did that I doubt I would have learned what little I have, or tried to understand others who might come from a different 'place' to my own in all senses of the word.

Well it seems to me like you stopped reading the thread when you read that post marra.

The answer, for your information, is no. I read the article, more than once.

Fair enough just wondering. It's just to me that I read this pernicious SMBism as shorthand for 'I know it all' - an irrational pet hate of mine I know. Read the rest of the thread marra. Interesting.
