Can see why Kelly didn’t want the 12 rounds previously

Always remember Booth saying early on that Carl Thompson was all wrong for David Haye at that stage in Haye's career and he wishes he had pulled him out. Wouldn't be surprised if that was in his thinking at the time of the initial fight that was scheduled between Kelly and Avanesyan

Tony Jeffries

12th fight, and fighting for a European title

It’s to soon man!

Look at who Hatton, Haye, Froch and so many other top fighters before them, who they fought in there 12th fight

They rush so many prospects these days
It’s sink or swim rather than building them

Hard to argue there. He needed a lot more 12 round fights before going in with someone like that.

A loss isn’t the end of the world according to Nelson.

He’s one of the best examples, he lost his first 3 and was 6-5 at one point

Not a fan of him as a pundit but his episode of Boxing Life Stories is definitely worth a listen. Openly admits that he was useless when he first walked into the gym and lacked confidence for a significant portion of his career

It’s how boxing has gone, it hasn’t just suddenly happened, just look at how infrequent fighters are active compared to how they used to be as well.

Have you seen his managers (Avanesyan) interview with IFL? Basically said it was scheduled for 12 and Hearn/Kelly said it’s was 10. They seen the legal contract said 12 so pulled cos of illness

Don’t think Kelly will ever be world level but can definitely rebuild and challenge at some point. Surprised at his fitness mind, took Avenasyan to win but didn’t expect the fight to go as it did.
Wallin Breazale later should be a canny scrap

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but it was clearly too early for him. Get back to walking before running and let’s see what he can do, losing to a class fighter in only his 12? Fight, hardly the end of the world.

Exactly. He needs to go the distance with more experienced fighters a few times before stepping up.

Kelly is an example of that to be fair. Should have had double the fights he has before stepping up to this level.

Underestimating an opponent from a trainer/manager/promoter level or overestimating your fighter?

I watched one of Kelly’s fights yesterday and was surprised at how much he leaves himself open having not seen much of him previously.

You can’t do it stepping up a level unless you’re really good at dodging well thought out punches.
