Wilder said all of a week ago that he turned down more money from Joshua to fight Fury
Not saying 'Joshua was scared of Wilder' or anything like that but Wilder was talking about the Fury rematch when Hearn had Wembley booked for Joshua but couldn't find an opponent. He would have got an absolute load of criticism if he'd turned down the rematch to take more money (he was contractually obliged anyway) and Hearn knew that. Whereas the stick Hearn/Joshua got for not fighting Wilder was when negotiations broke down the year before prior to the first Fury fight.

and Fury/Wilder is money but he's done a great job of avoiding it.

Well that's a whole other issue but I was just explaining why he took it. He didn't want to vacate, especially as at the time Fury v Wilder III was meant to be happening, which is a contractual rematch clause that short of a pay off of Wilder, which AJ would know if there was a chance of happening, stops AJ v Fury/Wilder until their contractual obligations are met. Hence not vacating the IBF and taking the Pulev fight.
