OGS, Arteta, Giggs (with Wales), Scott Parker off the top of my head.

You then have those that have jumped into jobs based on nowt, albeit with other clubs. Gerrard, Rooney and the like

No success stories there as yet. Last I can think of was Dalglish, but a chimp could have probably done the job with that Liverpool side.

The acid test was always going to be when the transfer ban ended and he was able to buy players. He’s spectacularly failed in that sense.

But could see this coming a mile off given what he did in the summer, absolute fantasy football approach to his signings. No idea how to play them all in a system, and also must have been a bit of a fuck you to a lot of the younger players who did so well last season.

Lampard has just thanked Abramovich for not poisoning him with plutonium.

As if they are 'his' signings. No chance.

They had Mount, Hudson Odoi, Loftus Cheek, Pulisic, Barkley all who can play those attacking midfield roles and he decided to spunk daft money on havartz, ziyech and Werner who are no better than any of them. Tammy had also just come off the back of a very good season, to then start sitting on the bench.

Tomori had broken through and started to look very good, pushed a side for Thiago.

He royally fucked up!

I feel if he'd carried on with the young English approach he's have been granted more time also

perhaps he had n say in those buys...Roman bought them and told frank to play them ?

He knew it was coming, so he will be relieved. He did a decent job last season with the younger players, but trying to incorporate the big money players that he didn't sign was always going to be difficult.

Plus, the sight of Jody Morris in his tracksuit always smacked a bit too much of the small time for Chelsea and their billions.

Oh of course. It happens all the time however, that’s football.

Zidane - Real Madrid
Pep - Barca
Xavi - soon to be Barca
Shearer

It used to happen all the time, it seems to be coming back into fashion again.

Generally its either club icons or players who are more high profile than the club who appoint them. There was a time when any sort of combative player was thought to be perfect management material, and also a spell where it was thought any foreign player would make a good manager, especially if they'd played in Italy (so the bizarre appointment of Atillio Lombardo at Palace 🤣).

It often used to be that they'd bring these people in as player-managers.

We did it ourselves with Keane, who was a perfect combination of both being very high profile and had the sort of playting style that people thought meant he would be a good manager. Before we appointed Peter Reid, there were chants at Roker Park for Chris Waddle to get to job. Waddle was playing for Bradford at the time and people wanted him to get the job based on no more than him being famous and being a Sunderland fan 🤣

We signed Butcher as a player after he'd been player manager at Coventry, and then appointed him player manager!

There's loads of examples. Keegan at Newcastle. Robson at Boro. Dalglish at Liverpool. Gullit and Viali at Chelsea. Solskjaer may have managed elsewhere, but he got the job because he is a former Man U player, not because of his stellar record at Molde or Cardiff. Rooney just got the Derby job, who also gave Lampard the job because he'd been a top player.
