Lack of fight - unacceptable.

Bar a 10 min spel in the 1st half I thought we competed well.

Would have helped to have had some officiating from someone who isnt corrupt though

I was really happy with the performance today but it was another case of individual howlers costing us dearly. Cuellar is never a right back in a million years and the 1st and 3rd goals were shocking mistakes from O'Shea and Bramble/Cuellar.

I've been to Old Trafforf countless times and although I watched it on the box today I can honestly say that I've never seen us create as many chances or be as positive as we were.

A manager cannot legislate for individual brain farts but the spirit was there and attacking wise, I'm not sure we have played as well for a long time. Wickham, Sess, McClean and Gardner all had really good attacking displays. They weren't playing against donkeys either. Wickham is really starting to look like a player. Anyone that was critical of him last season as an 18 year old in his first PL season is quite frankly an absolute fuckwit. I'll be amazed if there have been many other 19 year olds play like he did today at Old Trafford.

It's the same old story with regards to the individual errors but they will always come when individually we have some poor players.

I'd love to see how other teams would do at Old Trafford without their Rose and Cattermole equivalents.

There was loads of encouragement today. We are starting to look like a team and with a few January reinforcements I feel there is a cause for optimism. However, we all know there are people itching for things to fail. The Exile, Mainze, festa etc are all massive shitbags.

You really think we will sign a few players in Jan? Doesn't seem realistic.

I think we'll bring in 3 or 4. Rose, Dawson a loan and another signing.

If we don't then I'll be nervous about the rest of the season.

Every neutral media has described the game as a stroll or easing to victory, but the clappies know better.

Well, I mean the alternative is that you watched that game so you know for yourself how it went.

Did you?

I think that if we don't bring in at least one defensive reinforcement and at least one central midfielder that we'll be in real trouble. There's really only so long that you can wring your hands and wonder 'if only'.

But having said that I do think we've got just about enough, although it really shouldn't just take that. I kind of think that our squad is good, but we lack in key areas and by god in those areas we really do lack.

I saw a good Man Utd side really up for it, I saw us not good enough. I saw them slack off and then us get time, space and opportunities.

I didn't see a lack of fight.

We are very fortunate that there are some other appalling sides in the league. I suspect that we'll have a bigger kitty than most of them in January.

That's where O'Neill needs to perform.

I'm not sure. Despite Redknapp's protestations, I expect QPR will have money to spend. Reading are owned by a Russian oligarch so you never know with them. Wigan won't spend but then they never do but still manage to get by and Southampton probably won't spend.

Who knows really, but either way we really do need to reinforce because there is a real risk of us being in the bottom 3 come the New Year and that's not where you want to be at that time.

As you say, it's really where the manager needs to step up. And it's a kind of back him of sack him situation. I hope Short realises this.

I don't agree about sacking him at all as I don't think anyone could do anything with this squad. We need to invest in quality players in key positions. As simple as that.

Post of the night.

I can twist with the best of them about certain areas/players but it's because I want what the best for SAFC. There are posters on here who want us to be shite so they can twist/spout shit and antagonise proper fans. Quite pathetic.

And yes, I do genuinely believe that.

I couldn't agree more. We're not in a bad place squad-wise. There's just a manager that is renowned for motivating players with a squad that has massive holes. And that's it.

The test of his abilities will come when we've got a bloody squad that is remotely capable of tracking up the league. If anything he's a victim of his own success of last year when he did so much with a lot who by rights should not have finished where they did. The sooner we realise that the better.

Me too. With certain players/managers I end up trying to avoid the subject as people already know my feelings (like Mick McCarthy during the 15 point season, it got to the point where I didn't even comment on him before our form got really bad).

I've noticed over the years there are people who after certain players (or manager failings) make mistakes will be on here like a shot. Whilst most of us will be thinking things over and reflecting, disappointed about the game, they'll be telling people how they were correct and glowing about it, whilst upping threads where they've posted about these things.

There's been many threads where I've been correct and also a lot where I've been wrong. I've seen the ones upped where I was wrong (laughably Gary Breen and Kenwyne Jones being the major 'wrong' ones, when it ended up turning all the way around) and they were upped and upped to show I was wrong, but I've never ever upped one to show I was right, because usually it means it's gone wrong for Sunderland.

Too many get caught up in their own arguments and then try to justify them though.

I really cannot stress this enough. I don't believe in him as such, I just believe another sacking this early would be wrong and that with this squad we wouldn't get anything but a minor improvement at best, if at all.

I've seen recent improvements recently and more freedom, but what that's allowed is other sides to show our weaknesses. We really need to address a few areas in our side and I'd rather have the man known to be a good organiser and motivator to do it, rather than some unknown.

Agree on both posts. What gets me is when I'm called a this and that for some opinions as if I actually enjoy that something is bad or a player is shit. It's not for the good of my health that I'll try and point something out and when I do I always try to provide my reasoning behind it. Unless, that is, the original post in question is just a load of tripe and doesn't warrant a decent response.

In the summer I was called all kinds for saying we had one of the worst midfields in the league, suggesting we could be a better team if we got a good offer for Sess and used the money on someone maybe not as talented but more suited to us and for sticking up for Wickham. I defended Rose, criticised Bardsley and was critical of Mig. Out of all of that I'd say I was only overly critical of Mig as I'm not convinced about his foot movement. Generally I have a decent record of calling things. This is where the difference comes in though - I can stand up and argue the merits of players and the club until the cows come home and I also get no enjoyment from admitting when things are bad. There are a number who will post nothing positive whatsoever and revel in shite.

We've had that nugget posting at half time of the Fulham game about Fletcher and then The Exile today at half time. I really don't understand people like that. Mainze is another prize tit that does nothing but snidey comments and digs at the club. Wankers to a man.

Good to see the official excuse thread still going strong.

I'm still convinced you're just a wind up

I actually think he is Des, and have done for a while. Started out as unable to write a post that was comprehendible when Des used to get on here criticising people. Had a niggling feeling back then that he was another of Des' alter-egos . Wouldn't put it past him to be on here stirring people and talking absolute bollocks, just a shame others have fallen in line with his way of thinking.

On today, obviously we could have set up differently and I wasn't entirely happy to see CC at RB instead of Gardner, especially having seen him a get ripped apart there when playing for Villa. However, the criticism being thrown about regarding spirit and fight show people up for having agendas rather than making a considered statement about the team and performance.

Post of the night.

Don't talk nonsense! How are people itching for things to fail?! Nobody in their right mind would willingly choose failure over success! People only speak with gloom because that is all they can see! Every think of that fuckwit? Things aren't going well for us in case it has slipped your mind.
