L.A. advice

Basically. Culver city maybe. You probably won’t get shot and it puts you in the middle. Ish. Palihotel?
Culver City looks good, close to airport, coast, Beverley Hills for a mooch
I say close It looks massive, all the trains go north and east of the downtown LA. Dont know if I want to go that far out, only there 5 nights.

Not getting shit is a bonus.

Where would a Northern English middleaged bloket take himself drinking on a Satda night by himself in LA? Good Craft beer?

Cheers.
Want to see the beaches, may look to book a few nights on one of them, but think i'll have to stay a few days up by the Convention Centre. As I dont want to hire a car.

Only way out of the airport is a taxi Im guessing?

Bet youve got a better kitchen than me. Mines crap.
Genuinely looking for some advice, this is always a good place.

Basically want a cheapish, safe area to go out drinking on my tod

There are some hotels within walking distance of LAX but Uber is your best option if you are going further afield.

Not that hot this time of year but still a lot warmer than here!

Cat and Fiddle

Santa Monica is nice or if you stay on the coast to go Malibu and have bait and drinks at Dukes. Nip into Paradise Cove and see where Jim Rockford used to keep his trailer!

Some interesting characters in Los Angeles. Love it.

Not that popular among a lot of people, but if you spend long enough there it gets under your skin. Had some fun times there.

Go down Venice and get amongst it.

One of the best places in the world to live. Visiting maybe a bit iffy as it’s so vast.

Love it myself.

Avoid anywhere close to the airport, not nice areas.

Going to Los Angeles for first time with work. (I know. Look at me).
Any advice where to stay oh wise RTG?

Have to be in the LA Convention Centre for a few days. Next to Staples centre.
South of Hollywood and the Dodger Stadium. But It all looks canny big and heard transport is non existent. Ubers i Guess.
Any good neighbourhoods near there?

Will have a few days free, Will take myself out on the lash. Anything else to do.
Venice beach I guess. Not arsed with Hollywood.

Any good experiences?
Stayed in Beverly Hills.

Santa Monica, Chateau Marmont, House of Blues, are worth a visit.

Dodger Stadium has a great view over the hills from the top of the stand.

Prepare to be disappointed, I thought it was going to be amazing, still had a decent time, just wasnt quite what I was expecting.

I can imagine. Most exotic place I'll have been to, never really fancied It, anywhere else in US is more appealing. Just looked at a map today and its a minefield. Will look for 2 days downtown close to the Staples centre and 3 on the beach somewhere.

Dont want to spend too much work money but dont want to be mugged.

Yeah, it's kind of in the middle of where you want to go. You jump on the metro and it's Santa Monica one way, downtown the other. Not great if you get shot, but everything in life comes with risk.

Get yourself in a few decent bars and watch the world go by

Stayed in West Hollywood at the Mondrian and it was spot on for Sunset Boulevard then just took an Uber to Venice. Would love to go back and sample OC, Malibu etc.

Get a flight to Vegas or down to San Diego and stay in gaslamp instead for 3 days

Been a few times to LA and not a fan tbh

Get a car, taxis were non-existent when I was last there, although maybe Uber has changed that. Make sure you have sat nav too, as its a bastard to navigate around. I always used to rent mustang convertibles from fox hire, but that's going back a while. The subway is very limited and be careful driving at night - there's some Olympic quality drink driving goes on there.

Downtown is pretty minging, so be careful where you go around there.

I've stayed in the Central near downtown, the W in Westwood, and the Mondrian. The Viceroy was very nice in Santa Monica too. But other than the standard they all cost a canny bit (I have never stayed there on my own money!).

I liked driving the full length of sunset boulevard from the PCH to downtown, and also driving mulholland drive (twisty Road in the hills) at night. As someone else mentioned, Silverlake and Echo Park are cool areas for bars and restaurants that are quite near downtown. Culver City was canny (used to eat at a restaurant there run by one of the beach boys sons) but quite far out.

Santa Monica and Venice are interesting for a day out, especially the canals in Venice a couple of blocks back from the beach.

If it was me, I’d fly up to San Francisco and find some brew pubs around Union Square or the Waterfront. Do the tourist stuff like Alcatraz and have a great weekend. Not a fan of LA.
