KP states "county cricketers are muppets"

Interesting interview with KP singing the praises of the big bash and how it could work in England. He believes County cricket should be reduced to 10 teams for at least all one day cricket. He believes this would make it a high quality competition.
He makes some excellent points then his ego takes over and describes county cricketers who are on 15 to 18 grand a year as MUPPETS.
It kind of sums KP up .

Wonder how his Surrey team mates will take that comment...

As far as Surrey goes he has been released. There is talk of him signing a similar contract with Somerset as he had with Surrey. Apparently matey with Matty Maynard.

I think KP is referring to the dead wood which clog up county cricket rather than young players. Every county has got a few players who are no longer promising youngsters who are not good enough to play regular first team cricket and are never going to be good enough and would be no where near a state squad in Australia or a big bash team.

What's the actual quote and what's the context?

He was asked about the salary cap.

"What’s frustrating is they say they want to help home-grown players. But the best way to make them become better is to play against better players. Find a way to franchise county cricket. You would have 10 counties or franchises who play each other in Twenty20 or one-day cricket. All the muppets who are on £18 grand, £15 grand, either you become better or you go and do something else. The best players would play against each other week in week out. That’s how you become better. You don’t do that by reducing salary caps."

He may have a point, but doesn't need to be a tactless dick in the process.

I never thought it was as much as 18k like.

There's got to be a big variation between counties and between players at a county.

I read this in an article on salary cap in the FT

"Compare that with the average first-team salary in county cricket: about £50,000 a year. Of course, some elite overseas players, such as former South African Test captain Graeme Smith at Surrey, can make a reported £150,000, but they are extremely rare."

If this is right then for those making around £15k that would be when they're trying to make a career and I'd imagine if they don't make it and increase that amount they would go and do something else quite naturally.

In addition to their wages players will look for sponsorship, a lucky few will play representative cricket or find a gig abroad in the off-season or do what Chris Rushworth has been doing and do a bit of paid coaching.

I'd doubt players are on the bread-line but I'd also think they're not rolling in money and apart from the top top players (e.g. KP and his private jet) they'll know that when their playing days end they'll need to find a new source of income.

Adelaide strikers opener was working on the railway 2 years ago and in his 30s

This. Loads of deadwood in county cricket

I've seen far worse comments by folk on that Durham match chat that used to exist
