Kodi stream blocking "game changer"

I think the main focus of this clampdown is the mainstream users who've bought kodi boxes and haven't much of a clue about how the thing works. Kill those streams and put the frighteners on and most will give up. That's a win for Sky etc. as they may buy a subscription. Most of these users won't even know about the option of paid streaming. The fact it's always 'kodi boxes' shows who is being targeted. FFS, these paid streaming services can be streamed via just about anything these days - Windows, Android, Apple, Roku, Amazon Fire, Chromecast, etc... People with a paid streaming service and VPN should be pretty confident they will continue to be able to watch matches. As long as they are hosting in some 'safe' offshore location then they should be pretty safe. Disruptions through DOS attacks may come and go, payment systems may be targeted but ISP's aren't going to stop people using VPN's so that rules out any prevention of access to the streams. I read some bollocks somewhere that they reckon they can identify when people are streaming matches / movies via VPN - can't see how they could do that other than a bandwidth increase but who's to say it's not just some huge file being downloaded? They wouldn't be able to know what match it was anyway!

As said many times, pretty crazy there is no official way to do this these days! Would willingly pay to watch SAFC games - that's the whole point Sky are missing. A lot of people are not doing it to save money - it's the ability to watch your own team's games, no whatever games Sky are showing.

That's a good post marra. Spot on an all. If you kill the free streams like sportsdevil then they will see it as a win. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if those doing these reports on the one show or the mail don't even know about paid streaming.

But that is not how the internet works, if 1.2.3.4 is in Iran then sky, Plusnet or the uk government can do little about it without Irans help.

Plusnet could block it but vpns will circumvent that, you can't block vpns as they are used for legitimate purposes too.

Also by the time anything happens 1.2.3.4 will have moved to 5.6.7.8

The premier league and sky can never win as their is an army of people who are very skilled ready to defeat any counter measures.

The only way to stop it, is the provide a legitimate service at a reasonable price. Just like the music industry had to eventually do.
Yep

I think some people naively think isp's like sky & virgin are going out and blocking servers from places in f***ing Guatemala direct or something

Thought SM weren't actually having payment issues but were shelving taking payments while they work on the best way going forward. They are giving out free codes for subscriptions in the meantime

I've watched all he games no bother so far with the free codes

Yes that's true.

I think they are worried that they can easily have their financial source cut off andy are trying to make it as untraceable as possible - hence the delay in any new members. They are trying to "hide" the payment servers. (IMHO)

Wont happen pure fantasy. Movie studios are much more powerful than the premier league and you can still watch films on cinema for free.

People streaming are more intelligent than those chasing and dont have to keep to the law.

I was just thinking that as I was watching the lastest movies on Convenant thru Kodi.

Thinking of complaining mind. They still haven't got a good version of Dunkirk on yet :D

My point of view is that sky and bt show mostly the top clubs, as a Sunderland supporter I am not really interested in these games, in reality if I could see all Sunderland games live I would be prepared to pay a reasonable amount why should I pay sky so that the divide between top and bottom is maintained. That was part of the reason I have a sportsmania sub as I spend most of the winter abroad and go to most home games when I this country.

i always find it funny people saying they'd quite happily pay a fee if iFollow for example was officially available in the UK. would you fuck  it would just make it far easier to get a free stream if that happened without the need for VPN's etc..
And rightly so

Yep Sky is quality if you are a Man Utd supporter, or if you stupidly want to watch them up the road. I looked at Sky's schedule the other day and Newcastle are on 7 times up until the end of October. They may well be on BT too as I haven't checked that one.
Mike Ashley must have something on Murdoch.

I'd have no qualms of putting my hand in my pocket and paying any company to watch Sunderland. Hell I've paid just for the right to listen to them as it stands on our website. If sky were to copy Ifollow and bring out a scheme to watch your club it would be a roaring success. Sadly they don't and therefore I normally have no choice but to PAY sportsmania for that right. Equally I refuse to pay 50 pound a month for a sports package from Sky that shows 5 Sunderland games a season. It seems every country in the world is allowed access to all games apart from the UK - I get they want to keep the stadiums full but they really aren't giving people much choice which is mad considering the quality of product they could deliver to every football fan.
their heads are in the sand mate. the penny will drop for the clubs one day.

thats bullshit mate sorry , as soon as iFollow was announced those of us who use it now logged onto the site willing to pay £110 season pass fee , eager to watch our games , only to find it is officially only available to non uk users. If sky offered the same service for £110 all of us would be happy to pay it. If you read the post above yours , he nails it when he says , the actual cost of sky/bt isn't the overidindg factor , the point is people want to watch their team and the big bots are screening the games abroad .
Offer the streams here and people will pay.

I've quite happily paid for 2 ifollow matches this week marra.

It's £5 for goodness sake.

It's tremendously obvious from the traffic when someone is using vpn to stream rather than copy a huge file with deep packet inspection, it fingerprints the trafic and can see what it is by the characteristics of the data. Some can even see the differences between different streaming platforms - netflix compared to amazon for example.

Some VPN software now has anti fingerprinting settings which sort of obfuscate this but it means that it has to do a lot of work in effectively un-optimising your data then putting it back together at your client end so with streaming especially this could have a performance impact. One of the best ways of defeating this right now is stuff like acestream where the stream is p2p so the traffic is going to multiple source and endpoints once out of your vpn provider so the fingerprint is all messed up.

They will quickly find a way around these anyway but the fact is even when they can see what you're doing they cant see the content without decrypting your traffic, so they cant tell WHAT you're streaming. To combat this the media companies would have to either get something to say they could force ISPs to decrypt your vpn or force them to traffic shape any streaming activity at 3pm on saturdays. either seems f***ing unlikely. hopefully. not like they would tag "ability to decrypt peoples vpns" to a terrorism bill or nothing since theres never been evidence of domestic terrorists using them.
