It's nice. Not a bad if you want the Thailand that comes with Irish bars. Koh Samui for me. Idyllic.

Well, there are a multitude and I found that there wasn't really anything in KS that you couldn't do from the mainland. It depends if you want R&R or nightlife, I guess.

Might be all right for you then. Have a bit of a dig around some others before you take the plunge, though. It's not so idyllic if that's of interest to you but has a few cracking beach bars.

I liked it. Stayed in the anantara lawana, far enough out of the main bit to avoid the hustle and bustle but close enough that’s it’s easily accessible. Also got a motorbike and had a mooch round the island

The night life is better in Chaweng, and Lamai is better for idyllic beach

Chaweng has some Irish bars, and seems a bit more like UK/Australia drinking than other parts of the island

Ko Tao and Ko Pha-Ngan are nicer but an arse to get to on the boat, especially after 3 flights from the UK.

I liked Ko Samui more than Phuket. Great little place, however I went when you could rent your own beach hut for 50p a night, so might be different now.

I've never been to any of the Thai islands but the one that was recommended to me, a few years ago, by a Thai was Ko Chang (mind you, it could have had something to do with the fact that her then b/f owned a resort there).
