Kirchhoff

He plays behind the midfield so he's not really in a position to offer decent passes forward; it's a very simple role in one way but it's a really hard role to play well, as anyone who's played football at any level would recognise. You get a lot of the ball in hard places, you need to be calm on it and aggressive off it.

There's maybe an argument that players who play that position well get over-praised in England because they're nearly all imports (presumably because English kids don't get taught the same ball skills or awareness) but Kirchoff is undeniably class at playing there and one of the better players Sunderland have signed in the last decade. Not panicking with a lot of boys milling around you is hard - if Shelvey had to pick the ball up deep consistently he'd look even worse than he does.
Well said matey

Superb player but surely he should be able to last a full 90 minutes by now?

Is Rodwell fit yet?

He's not played, he's been injured and he is also a big bloke so its not a surprise he is struggling, particularly since he is covering for other people aswell.

Hope he keeps it up because on his last 3 or 4 outings he is a very decent player, just need some speed beside him. Could easily sell him in the summer at a decent profit if need to because he has been noticed by everyone.

Class. We have the makings of a very good side if we stay up.
This I just hope we can get over the line this is what Sam is good at getting players for pennies that no one else had even thought about if we stay up the future is bright but that's a big if

Shameless copy and paste from the other Kirchhoff thread ;)

I've just been looking at Squawka while slating Rodwell yet again for lack of involvement over the 90 mins and I think I know one reason why Kirchhoff is knackered, possibly along with M'Vila.

Some will have watched MOTD Saturday and possibly seen this reason. MOTD highlighted how Kirchhoff got involved and tackled and won the ball back and showed 5 or 6 clips of him doing this. According to Squawka, Rodwell made 0 tackles yet Kirchhoff made 14 with a 43% success rate (M'Vila made 7). They highlighted this on MOTD very well and showed how Kirchhoff got involved and made tackles and did it very well. If you also watch Rodwell in the clips they show, I think he's in the centre circle patrolling in all but 1 or 2 clips!

Now we all know Cattermole isn't a passenger so he would have possibly had a few tackle attempts and he made 2 in the 10 mins or so he was on. To have 0 tackle attempts is f***ing shite if you ask me! You may think this is a one off but I've just checked the Southampton game and guess what, 0 tackles from Rodwell! Kirchhoff made 5 attempts winning 2 and M'Vila made 4 winning 1!

Also 0 on the Dailymail for tackles so not just 1 source saying he is not bothering tackling.

So that's 2 full games now that Rodwell has played and hasn't made a tackle according to Squawka and Daily Mail. He may have made some half hearted attempt who knows but to get 0 for 2 games while those around you are making tackles is shite. That means others are putting in more effort and obviously using more energy while Rodwell prances about in the centre cirlce dictating play with his pointing for most of the game. I do recall he made a block in the Man Utd game that many praised him for. Many of those praising didn't rewatch the 10 seconds prior to that as Mata was his man that he'd lost in the box after trailing behind him from the halfway line.

Kirchhoff needs workers around him and sadly Rodwell isn't one and not worth the 90 minutes so he can get involved the few times in the game he does.
