Nolan or Cattermole .As a midfielder Cattermole. Completely different types who play in different roles, both with limitations, but Cattermole can play without needing others to play in an exact way to get him to do a quite limited role. Though on a few occasions in his career Nolan was quite good in that role, he was in effect a striker though, not given the responsibility defensively and not having to lead the line. Even when younger playing a central midfield role both at Bolton and then early at Newcastle it was clear Nolan wasn't up to it and it's why he was bombed out at Bolton after being left out of the team and Newcastle first wondered what they'd bought.

Adam or Cattermole - complete polar opposites and although they play in different roles, at least comparison can be made here. Cattermole has fitness and is tenacious, works extremely hard and has a pretty basic game, on occasions he can play and sometimes he can be very effective. Sometimes he's too slow, too rash and looks out of his depth. With Adam he's a technically good footballer, has a bit of grit in his game, but has virtually nothing in the way of fitness and stamina. I'd take Adam into our team, though I think he'd have to be used sparingly, maybe more for home games.

Good post. It's the answer i was hoping from young Rocky.
Obviously all three are variants of the same positions, some definitely more pronounced.
I compare all three mainly because they fit into a similar profile in terms of physique and athletic ability. It's the different way they use their ability is what i was interested in, not if Cattermole can only play with his right foot inside a 5 yard circle on the pitch.
Adam is a player i must admit i under rated for a good while based on his appearance, for that i'm at fault. In hindsight i accept he makes the most of his attributes. He scores more than the odd goal, he's ok at passing and he tackles quite tenaciously. There's a few of the things he does i'd be happy for Cattermole to emulate. If most Premiership managers were given a choice between the two i now think Adam might come out on top.

As for Nolan, a different variant but would he have brought more positives to our side on a consistent basis in say the last 5 years?

You got that answer, they play different roles

I already told you this, I don't do waffle like you.

Anyway who would you say is better Pantilimon or Defoe?

I'm saying they play different roles within a team, I'm sure you can understand that. Would you buy Kevin Nolan to play a defensive role? A simple yes or no will suffice don't waffle on.

The rest is just waffle to cover your pathetic question.

Who was better? Zidane or Baresi. Honestly, man what a f***ing twonk.

I like professional sportsmen who can all carry out the basics to a high enough level but add an extra 10-20% in a certain area. They should all be capable of being relatively interchangeable in a certain area of the pitch.
When we're defending i'd expect Adam and Noble to both be capable of sitting back and defending withe the rest of the team. When we're attacking i'd expect Cattermole to be capable of adding some positive contribution. This isn't a f*cking pub team. They've all had 8 hours a f*cking day for most of their lives to hone their skills. To be pigeon holed into such a role that you seem to accept from Cattermole is bordering on professional f*cking negligence.

To put it into easier context for simpleton's then, can Adam and/or Nolan defend better than Cattermole can attack? Is that simple enough for you??

Oh, and by the way, Good Morning Rocky!:)

It's ok Rocky, a football man Perryqhill has answered for you!!:)

I'm not sure, what do you think? Also in a squad of 25 and 7 subs allowed would you not buy an attacking midfielder because of their defensive ability?

I'll humour you on this one, what do you think of World Cup Runner Up, 2 times la Lig winner, 2 times Premier League winner, Champions League winner, FA Cup winner Claude Makelele who made that role fashionable and played it brilliantly? He rarely played anything but that position and coaches wouldn't buy him expecting to play anything but that role.

Thats waffling for me, in short you're talking shite.

You've been brainwashed, why do we need to use up a shirt with a player who is limited to a 5 yard circle on the pitch?? I'm sure ive read on this forum many times that certain posters prefer Cattermole in a more advanced position, slightly ahead of our other midfielders.
I understand as an amateur you're unable to compare midfielders on their overall abilities so i won't push you into an answer you're uncomfortable with.

I agree about Cattermole and Adam being incomparable, Cattermole is blond and Adam is more of a mousy brown.

I've been brainwashed?
The holding midfielder is used in a lot of professional sides, are these professional coaches also brainwashed?

You asked a really stupid question and now you're doing what you normally do in these circumstances. You waffle. People are wise to it now man, its old hat.

Perryqhill managed to answer the question quite well, even pointing out the difference between Nolan and Cattermole's preferred roles, which i agreed are more defined than Adam's.
Obviously the times when Cattermole has already played a more advanced role should be ignored, and the posters who prefer him in that role ignored too.

Let me ask another stupid question, when the day comes to replace Cattermole will we be specifically looking for a one footed player who patrols a 5-10 yard circle on the edge of our box? Would that rule out a two footed player who circles 15 yards or is that not specialised enough for you??

All this so you can have a pop at Cattermole, I get it you don't like him. I fully expect some answer, waffle, saying you like him when blah blah blah. You asked me who I thought was better. I, correctly, said they play different roles within a team. You can't seem to accept that for some reason. You then waffled some absolute bollocks about professional negligence and being brainwashed.

Its rather sad, bollocks I'm waffling now.

The only thing I can think is that he's identified character and leadership as something we're missing in midfield and a freebie who knows the system makes it more attractive. On ability alone Nolan wouldn't even be the first choice of the ex allardyce players who are currently available for free.

Not really to have a pop at Cattermole, you've driven me down that path yourself.
I'd say it's more to appreciate players i've loved to hate previously, Nolan and Adam. I could add say Robbie Savage also although he's a different body type.
I'm saying that Adam was a player i'd overlooked and shouldn't have. I made the error of underrating him because over the years he's proved to everyone that he's way better than his appearance. When everyone is screaming for athletic 6 footers in midfield here's a short fat scotsman more than holding his own statistically. I've been guilty of writing off Adam and if i'd been given the choice between him and Catts a few years ago i'd have gone with Catts 99% of the time. In hindsight i'm not so sure i would've been correct.

I compare Nolan as a hustler and bustler who uses his body and i understand they tend to play in different parts of midfield. He's another player who gets under opposition players and fans skin. Has he been more effective than Cattermole as a player, i'm not so sure? I wonder what independent football supporters would say and who they'd pick.

Ok

I'm not reading the rest

I, genuinely, haven't.
Yes, you, have.
This, is, just, like, the, good, old, days, arguing, about, Colback.
You, didn't, have, any, problems, comparing, our, midfielders, back, then. Unless, you, thought, they, were, all, holding, midfielders?

Anyway,, i've, got, to, go, out, now, to, play, with, some, cars.
Have, a, good, day!!:),:),:).
