The first two sections of the £44M New Wear Footbridge in Sunderland have been lifted into place.
A sea-going barge delivered the two steel sections, spanning a combined 83m, from Victor Buyck’s fabrication yard in Belgium on Sunday (4 August).
Contractor VolkerStevin worked day and night from Tuesday to Thursday morning (6-8 August) to install the sections.
VolkerStevin senior project manager Mike Rimmer said: “I’m really proud of what the team has achieved, with challenging high tides and the sites tight geography, successfully lifting these two sections into place has required flawless coordination between our lifting and marine teams to ensure these lifts could be completed within the narrow window of opportunity.”
The barge is on its way back to Belgium to collect the final two deck units. VolkerStevin is using strand jacking so that the main span can now be lifted in a single 105m long unit.
The new 250m long bridge, across the River Wear, is part of a plan to help revitalise Sunderland city centre by developing the riverside area and boosting connectivity.
Kevin Johnston, portfolio holder for housing, regeneration and business at Sunderland City Council, said: “It was a spectacle to behold seeing the first two sections of the new Wear Footbridge arrive at Port of Sunderland.
“The new Wear Footbridge is the linchpin of our overall plan to regenerate this important part of the city so it is fantastic to see yet another piece of the jigsaw fall into place as it begins to rise from the ground and take shape.”
It is part of the Riverside Sunderland masterplan, which will see workspace for over 8,000 people and homes for 2,000 residents delivered over a decade.
The bridge is expected to open in August 2025.

VolkerStevin project director Mark Denham explained to
NCE that the first few months of the scheme, which started in March 2023, were taken up largely by temporary works.
“There was a lot of material to be removed – clearing the site and bringing in lots of aggregates to form working platforms,” he said.

AtkinsRéalis worked on the bridge design. Its alignment follows the orientation of the Keel Line, a 292m long public artwork referencing the 8,102 ships built in the city’s shipyards on the south end of the bridge.
