alot of people mention (on here and in every day life) that a Father should look at pointing their offspring in the direction of the club they supported/still support. A lot of what's said is tongue in cheek but generally it does happen that way. Yet, for me. It's the other way round....

My dad is a Rangers man through and through (ex Season ticket holder) and then I came onto the scene and chose Sunderland for myself. Other than one cousin, I'm the only SAFC in my family. My dad now follows SAFC and gets to a few games a season plus a few aways a season. Without my support for SAFC, I don't think he'd have any reason to follow us. Just an interesting thought that I thought I'd share. Must be quite rare that. I can only apologise if this post is boring. :)

It's my dad's fault that I support Sunderland, and it's my fault that he supports them.

I like it nice and symmetrical.

But you prefer a Scottish club? Scotland?

A mate of mine,Sunderland born and bred, now lives through Low Fell, his son is a Newcastle fan,i know it's shite but he didn't want the lad getting grief in school for being a mackem..etc,etc..what do you do.

My children all made their own choices too. I'm all for children being independent thinkers.

Totally agree,me and the lads have hammered me mate for having a son who's a mag but at the end of the day the lad being happy and content at school is more important than the colours of stripes on a footy strip.

First thing i ever got told by me dad, that I remember, was that if i supported anyone else apart from sunderland I had to sleep in the garden in a tent. Looking back I'm glad he said this and I plan to say this if I have kids

If I had a son or daughter and they followed another team, I don't think I could ever follow their team just to retain the peace. I just wouldnt have it in me to follow another team as an equal or more than SAFC, or in truth to devote anything like the same emotion as I do SAFC. This is why I just don't get Macar. Lad said he wouldn't be bothered if Hibs beat Sunderland (unlikely I know) if the two clubs met in Europe. I just don't get that, a failing of mine most likely.

Weirdly though, due to the emotional investment in SAFC I very rarely enjoy watching SAFC against another team (unless in an unassialable lead and confortable or the game is meaningless) as I do two random teams.

I'd be far less understanding - "You're staying in that cupboard until you support the Lads".

It's probably your first real test of the psychological aspect of parenting - how to thoroughly brainwash them to support the right team, while maintaining the illusion of freedom of choice. But I'd fail that due to lack of patience - can't beat a dark cupboard imho.

Aye, there's that and then there is the 'Jozef Fritzel Method' which he used when his daughter said she wanted a Red Bull Salzburg scarf instead of Sturm Graz one. ;)

He should have kicked his kid in the balls for supporting Newcastle.

I know it's already been mentioned but Fritzl had a great method which ensured his kids/grandkids supported his team albeit at the risk of upsetting the apple cart with the authorities and the rest of the family but it worked.

By the way lauder, is your dad ginger?
Just with him trying another club to make new friends is a ginger thing to do.
