Joy Division Fans

This month is 40 years since Unknown Pleasures was released.

Mary Anne Hobbs did a show today with the rest of the band. Was listening on my headphones and had a dodge into town. Had an interview with Hooky and after his interview they played ceremony by new order. I got that adrenaline rush from music you rarely get.

There’s an interview with Peter Savile about the artwork as well.

Everything about that album is pure f***ing excellence. Artwork, Ian, what came after. Just sublime man.

Ian was a f***ing Legend.

Are you sure it was the whole band who played Ceremony today? Cant imagine Barney or Hooky ever playing together again, More likely to be Peter Hook & The Light who played

I relate to Closer on vinyl & the side with the four tracks are magnificent in terms of coherence and consistency. Beautiful & emotional & soulful as well. But its still a suicide note and gave Curtis no release or excuse to carry on life. When I drink I put Closer on. When I dont I put Unknown Pleasures on.

No man. Mary Anne Hobbs just played the record. The band didn’t play it

Stephen Morris was born in 1957 so would have been 22.

You up cutting the grass, grandad?

Nice work. Have a listen. Hooky is first on. Says Stephen was 17.

Ian was about 20 though right? He died at 21 maybe?

It was a good show yesterday. All the links to Joy Division/New Order made it very enjoyable, which is not something I’ve said about MAH’s radio show in the past.

Love it but Closer man......
I know how much you love Closer
I spent many years between the two never really being able to decide which was better

Closer was a beautiful album, more polished and crafted, but Unknown Pleasures was like nothing that came before or after - it probably took me 6 to 9 months to get it - but when I did, it was almost like all the doors and windows suddenly opened and they were never going to close again

It’s an album that has always had a profound effect on me

The show reckons he was 20.
He was born in 56 so was 22 when it came out - he’d been writing lyrics for years though so could well have been only 20 when some of the album was written

Can’t understand people liking closer over unknown pleasures like. Closer is dark as fuck and an awful listen when you think what transpired.

Was actually thinking though when was ceremony written and how much of it was by Ian? If it was around the time of closer it was lyrically a lot more upbeat. Would have been interesting to see how Joy Division would have developed if he hadn’t did what he did. Such as shame there’s such little of theirs to listen to. I absolutely love them me.

Ian wrote Ceremony and there are a few recordings of gigs from 1980 when it was played, most versions are poor and it sounds half finished
It was an apt and fitting debut single from New Order and my opinion is that everyone involved including Martin Hannett’s excellent production did it justice

I often wonder about what may have happened had Ian survived and I’m sure that Joy Division would have flourished, however their legacy is assured with the two albums that were made and New Order developed into a fine but very different band in their own right
In a sense, we got two great bands instead of one

Just the whole band get the writing credits.

If you read the lyrics closely, I'm not sure they are particularly upbeat. "All she asks is the strength to hold me, then again the same old story, word will travel oh so quickly..." The tone of the track is quite upbeat though which is an interesting contrast.

The only Joy Division song that I know wasn't written by Ian is 'Novelty', that was by Peter.

I remember asking my sister to pick up the LP from HMV in Sunderland in January 1980 as I'd heard it was in the sale. It was the archetypal......'First listen didn't get it....then over time I pretty much wore it out' album. I don't wish to sound like a coffin dodger but I hope that some youngster has the same experience with an album and then gets into non-mainstream music for the rest of their life. I genuinely feel sorry for those who only experience 'popular' music.

I feel dreadfully old.
