John Hall and SAFC

Robson is on the 93-4 end of season video speaking at armstrongs testimonial saying how he supported us...

Didn't say he supported us, just that he had been to Roker as a kid.

I find it highly unlikely someone growing up in Langley Park in the 30's and 40's would support the scum. We were the bigger club and LP is 75-80% SAFC even today.

Which is it then ?

Rubbish. He said on numerous occasions it was great to have Sunderland, Boro and the mags all in the top division as it was fantastic for the NE.

What he said and what he meant were different things. He was a business man and wanted his competitors out of the way, Hall was part of the reason that various projects in Sunderland didn't get off the ground.

IIRC, he lobbied against SAFC's proposed Washington stadium/shopping/leisure/hotel area because he felt Newcastle (the city) had the infrastructure in place for the NE and therefore no need for anything else.

In a way gad he blocked the Washington site would've been murder to get to the games unlike the SOL

Unless we were gonna put loads of infrastructure in lie a metro buses etc ;)

Absolutely, in hindsight SAFC in Washington would have been terrible IMO, not just for fans but for Sunderland city centre. It's not great as it is but without the fortnightly influx of 40,000 people, it'd be dead on its arse probably.

Maybe hall had Sunderland 's best interest at heart all along then eh ;)

this

Give over

He played his part in taking the ice hockey away from Durham and re-locating it to Newcastle. He didn't like West Hartlepool doing well, so setup a rugby team by buying Gosforth and renaming them, he bought the basketball team and it was rumoured he tried to invest in Durham CCC and if I remember rightly didn't he buy some sort of Le Mans racing car and put the NUFC badge on it?

As mentioned on here he blocked various Sunderland area projects

He wanted all the sporting attention on Newcastle.

Grade A (unt of a bloke.

It was a Lister Storm GT1, and it raced in Le Mans once in the mid 90s sponsored by the mags and Adidas - I think Tiff Needed (that F1 also-ran off of old Top Gear) might have been one of the the drivers too. They only sponsored it though - I don't think it was part of his grand plan for Newcastle United Sporting Club.

The rugby thing was surely more to do with the fact the sport had just turned professional in the mid 90s and there was scratch to be made. West Hartlepool were punching above their weight as an amateur team, and would not have stayed in a professional Premiership long, with or without the Falcons.

SJH is still a **** though.

And Bobby Robson is from Langley Park where, and am sure LangleyParkMackem will back me up here, everyone is Sunderland.

Also, Gazza never went to one Mag game as a fan.

WTF hate to spoil this but not everyone in Langley is Sunderland and I've never met Langelyparkmakem unlike Meelangleyftm and The Dark Traveller who used to get on the bus.

Doesn't bobby robson's brother run the Langley park safc branch ;)

Did he fcuk I set up the branch and ran it for 10 years two of Bobbys nephews
used the coaches until Bobby took over at the Mags then they stopped going.

You should know better you were at one of our nights.

Always said the Bobby had 2 chances to manage Sunderland and turned us down twice had one offer to manage Newcastle and took it.

His plan was to have a shared stadium at Gateshead.

He was also offered it when Keegan resigned in 97.

I stand corrected on that one.

The first Sunderland offer was when he was at Ipswich and TBF he wouldn't walk away from his contract there or he would have taken it.

The second he left his home at Esh Village, intending to take the job, to drive to Cowies home near Lanchester- by the time he got there he'd changed his mind
