Donald didn't give a fuck about our future he thought he'd be long gone by now.

I'm not sure Donald has much of a f***ing clue what he was doing. Obviously they wanted to flip the club in some way and there's been an awful lot of short term thinking. But then when trying to flip the club initially it was rumoured some of the reason it didn't happen was due to Donald wanting to stay on in some capacity. Then with FFP it looked like he'd still be in control, then he took the FFP loan.

It's almost as if the plan (as in Methven's Oxford messageboard comments) was minimal outlay, get promoted, instant profit and move on, but somewhere along Donald got involved with the adulation and the buzz of owning a club and it's been a bit scattergun, sometimes sticking to plan, sometimes doing his own thing.
Exactly what Southampton did in league one

Actually it's not. There's a bit of a myth that Southampton dropped down and reinvented themselves with kids - in truth Bale, Walcott, Kenwyne Jones and some others were long gone before relegation to league one. Then the first season down there barring Lallana they relied heavily on experience and players already on their books using only a handful of their own kids and that would have seen them promoted were it not for the points they were docked. Second season they used a few more of their kids like Oxlade Chamberlain but not loads, but the core of the team was bought.

The difference in the main was they actually gave their kids a chance, some looked superstars and as a result could demand good money, which was at times was reinvested. We have simply sold them early doors. I guess some of that is the way football is changing and the bigger clubs are actually looking to get more of these players in earlier being already aware of them, but we don't seem to have tried to keep them or develop them further and took the bigger picture.

I agree, no coincidence I guess that Neil signed a contract having been in and around the first team in preseason.
I read the Neil thing as evidence of the club being on a knife edge. We rely so often on these kids being MLFs to counteract the abject lack of pathway into the first team. Sometimes we get away with it (Neil). Sometimes not (Hugill and others). We're served a massive advantage with these lads being big fans and there being little local competition for their services. Yes a lot of that advantage is eroded by our current position in the pyramid, but we could turn that into a positive with the carrot of real first team exposure. The fact that we squander that position so carelessly is a scandal tbh.

Hit the post v Rochdale last night and scored his penalty in the shoot-out. Has scored 3 in his first 2 u18 games for Man Utd. Wonder what his transfer value would be already compared to the compensation they paid us? Hard not to believe that at least one of the dozen or so highly rated youth players that have left will be worth many times more than the collective compensation paid in the next few years. Short sighted thinking. I’m convinced more could’ve been done to keep these players.

Whee sets the compensation level?
Play for League Juan Sunlun or Juan of the biggest klerbs in the world?.......Tricky...

Think Sam Greenwood already made more than we have received from all the kids we have sold as Leeds paid £1.5m so think we have lost out financially already, although that could be peanuts in the long run.

nope incorrect that

I’d check your facts

Reading this article just shows how the current regime of our club is so wrong for Sunderland, running the club with small profits from some of the countries best young footballers - its a disgrace

He wasn't a home grown academy product, owed no loyalty to us and thus Fooked off at the first opportunity.....so please stop the Fookin hand wringing....

Aaaah yea cos that's the only way contact happens in your ethical ideal world eh?
he was on 800 quid a week and top scorer in the league. He was obviously going to be a player the pre-season after we went down from the premiership. Never mind the next one the squad should have been built around him and 5k a week offered in the first pre season in league 1. I would have let Asoro go either.

Enough money to buy another Dobson or a Baldwin. Honestly, just fuck off Donald.

MLFs or not if Man Utd or Arsenal knock at your door and we were playing in the premier league and they had a very real chance of making an appearance for us I think we'd still struggle to keep them.

Donalds failing for me is not given these lads contracts or the inability to negotiate so we can squeeze more money out of the clubs that are coming to cherry pick players from our CAT A academy, which I am not convinced we should be so precious about keeping while we are down in the depths of this league.

Neil signing is still a bit of a nothing to me until I see him get a run in the team against teams who are not even further down the pecking order, until then he is merely another name from the academy like Cook, Noble, Lynch and others whose names I have forgotten over the years who were lauded at one point or another and never got anywhere near our first team but probably made decent careers playing at some level.

Hugil, Greenwood (who scored a hat trick against an awful academy side) and Mumba still have to go on and prove they are good enough for their respective league clubs, Greenwood has already been moved on from Arsenal.

Maja was offered what he asked for, albeit too late, had no loyalty to us, used us as a stepping stone and left at the fust opportunity, so did his daft mate ..stop worshipping false Gods.....

I have, talking out of your arse. You see I've had this myth pedalled my way before.

Southampton first season in league One:
By then Lallana had been in and around the squad for three seasons and was 21/22.

Second season in league one:

Over both those seasons there's kids making handfuls of appearances here and there, but it's nothing like you're suggesting it was. the core of the team was built around Lambert, Davis, Fonte, Hammond, Harding, Barnard, Butterfield, De Prado, Chaplow, Jaidi - all of those were 26 and over and none were home grown. Added to that was Lallana, Scheiderlin and the second season down Oxlade Chamberlain and several lesser players.

Anyone decent barring Lallana was almost instantly flogged. What they done reasonably well was re-invest (after administration) quite well.

You're grasping at an idea of something which didn't really happen in the way you think it did. For instance Southampton were relegated in 2009 to league one and Walcott left in 2006 and Bale in 2007, Jones 2007, Baird 2007, Dyer 2009, Surman 2009 - all sold before relegation to league one. At this point Lallana had played a full season and a bit, Schnederlin had signed for 1.5m in June 2008 and in the next two seasons whilst a few kids got games the only ones who had come through their academy and made an impact was Oxlade Chamberlain who was sold after almost one full season.

Ward Prowse didn't make his debut till a season later and that was only two cup games.

Utter bollocks
Leading the line already aged 16 for manu 21s.

Absolutely sickening

Really is

Absolutely depressing what's been sacrificed

Lads like Greenwood, Mumba, Hughill, Pye etc... could have been part if the squad here

Massive missed opportunity that has been wasted

none of the lads have played at first team level but everyone's sure that we've been short-changed.

This lad is first choice and scoring for man united u21s aged just 16 getting rave reviews. Selling him for £300k you happy with that?

We’ve sold (yes sold as even paul reid admitted it) about 14 younsters for pennies its borderline criminal

Wind ya neck in it simply cannot be defended

We could have had:

Hume
Gooch
Maja
Neil
Diamond
Pye
Greenwood
Hugill
Mumba

All in the squad. It's an absolute piss take.

thats the thing - people would be prepared to give a team with those lads in time. We’ve got a bloated squad full of players who are no better than those above and have no potential to improve or make the step up or anything. It’s chronic criminal mismanagement from the potless shysters
