Jim Smith RIP

It was Jim Smith who gave me the confidence that we would win the second leg of the play-off in 1990. In the papers on the Wednesday morning, instead of talk about finishing the job off, he said "We dare not lose."

It betrayed a fear of losing a derby at home, against a Sunderland side that they had only drawn with through the season, and were outplayed for long spells in the 1-1 draw at Sid James' in the league.

He didn't deserve what his side and supporters gave him that night. He'd done great work at Birmungham and Oxford in particular, and lived and breathed the game.

A good, decent, down to earth football man.

RIP. Bumped into him once. he was sitting at the next table with Harry Redknapp in an Italian restaurant in Bournemouth (that Harry owned) the night before a B'mouth v Mags game. The mags won the game iirc. Would have been the same year as our play off win.

Could we not appoint him our manager?

I know he's died, but he might still be better than Parkinson.

But seriously: RIP, thoughts with his family.
