Re: Latest on Ji

We should keep him for another season and loan him out. By the end of that season our numpty fans will be convinced that he's better than Messi and will jump off Wearmouth bridge like lemmings when we sell him for peanuts.

Re: Latest on Ji

Ji is on reasonable wages, has good experience with relegation battles, is quite young, regularly caps & starts for the senior Korea Republic National Squad, ticks all of the Di Canio/De Fanti/Angelino boxes, and has had some positive memorable moments in a Sunderland shirt. All despite playing under the wrong sort of managers for the club.

The "Udinese Model" suggests that he can and, possibly, should be sold for profit as seen fit. To suggest that he's shit is disingenuous, though.

Re: Latest on Ji

I have been on here many times saying the lad should be given a chance and to let him go off on loan when we were so thin on attacking players will never make sense to me, but iirc he's coming up to his last year of his contract and if he wants to leave to play at a team like Dortmund in a league he's already had an impact in we might as well get what we can for him now, unless he's willing to sign a contract extension which seems unlikely as he will see himself as never been given a real chance. Good luck Ji lad, and another missed opportunity by the former regimes.

Re: Latest on Ji

Isn't the main point here that he doesn't want to come back to Sunderland? If he doesn't want to be here then we need to get rid no matter how much potential he has

Might depend what he's coming back to, genuine chance of first team football could well alter his thinking. I'd like to see him given a chance, I've always felt there was a good footballer in him but if wants to stay in Germany we can't really blame him and would be wise to cash in now.

Re: Latest on Ji

If he becomes a bargain signing that goes on to much better things for Dortmund, like Barrios or Lewandowski, will we say "we taught him all he knows" or "I don't see it me"?

Re: Latest on Ji

To all the Ji lovers:

He's shit. He always will be shit. Stop boring the intelligent people with posts like the OP.

Re: Latest on Ji

Decent player and I'd be happy to see him stay, but with Fletcher and a new striker ahead and with Paolo looking like he'll be giving Wickham the odd game I'm not sure he is needed, epically if we stick with a 1 striker formation.

If we can get some good money to put towards the squad redevelopment, we should take it as we have several areas that still need strengthening.

hasnt his 'better' performances in Germany been as the so called 'water carrier' in midfield?

Re: Latest on Ji

I'd like to see him stay. He hasn't been given a good run for us so we're yet to really see what he can do. It's extremely harsh to judge someone on a handful of 10 minute sub appearances.

He's had a good run of games in Germany and has obviously done well for a team battling relegation and in an unfamiliar position (an attacking central midfield position of which we are sorely lacking). He's still young and works hard so seems the right type of character for Paolo.

Saying that, I don't think he will say.

Big mistake by O'Neill letting him go out on loan and selling Frazier in January and replacing them with Danny Graham. I'd imagine one of those would have at least scored 1 goal between them.

Ultimately, this cost Martin his job.

Maybe we should have warned him, oh we did ! but we are just the fans and we know nothing.

It does raise an interesting point though, when Martin arrived he will have watched a few videos of our previous games to come up to speed with our weaknesses but there are thousands of fans who will have watched that entire team evolve over hundreds of games and they all knew that we were crying out for pace - a year later we ended up with Danny Graham.

This is the most relevant point. He didn't settle well here, despite giving us one very magic moment. He's now happier, and thriving in a country where he appears to feel more at home. The OP is not talking about him saving us from relegation. He's referring to his stint in Germany, and I'd hazard a guess that he's a fan of Ji, who is following him from Korea.
Good luck to him, he'll be better off over there.

At least Paolo seems to be see what we have been lacking for a while and looks to be trying to sort it out. Imagine a Sunderland team with a pair of actual full-backs rather than a couple of centre midfield players

Exactly, this is the thing with signing foreigners, some will settle, some wont. If they arent settled and happy in the country then they will never reach their potential.

Admittedly packing him off on loan hasnt helped him settle, but then again if he had stayed and had another decidely average season at SAFC like his first one then we wouldnt be having this conversation as people wouldnt care if he left!
