Re: Latest on Ji

Never rely on Goal.com as your source...

These articles are flat out wrong.

That was just the first article I found, I've read them elsewhere at the time as well. Goal.com actually provides a quote for Sun withdrawing from the Olympics. Are you suggesting that he never even made the quote?

Correct. It was based on a mistranslation in Kicker and Son had to come out and publicly state that he did not withdraw consideration from the Olympic squad but was left off of it.

There's absolutely no way he would be stupid enough to throw away an opportunity for military exemption. In any case, it's a major headache now, since he needs to earn military exemption in the next Asiad or Olympics after next year's world cup.

Re: Latest on Ji

Not scoring goals? Was a goal against City a dream? Maybe with ever so our loyal fans...Against Chelsea? Maybe against Chelsea United in Orkney Scotland. Against our GB team? Maybe the Goof Ball team...5 at Augsberg? Wait it wasn't against Dortmund and a few teams...nah it was against the Primary school in Germany which is just one notch above our faithful MON army of Sunderland... Hmmmm Stop making some of our posters look stupid Ji! You are incapable of scoring goals playing 10 minutes a game!

He never scores mate. 7 goals in 19 starts for us&Augsburg were just fruits of our imagination.

Have you got a link for that mate?

It's all in Korean. You can do a search on naver... You'll have to take my word for it. In any case, he was very disappointed and all the more so as his contemporaries now all have military exemption for two years of service.

So why was he left out considering how highly he's rated? Is Ji thought of as the better player in Korea?

It was a combination of factors:

1. Hong (the Olympic squad manager and potential next manager of the senior set up to be announced next week) was more familiar with JDW as he was in the U-20 WC quarterfinal squad and the Olympic qualifier squad.

2. SHM was coming off a frustrating season as well where he lost form and confidence following an injury.

3. JDW's versatility was preferred.

JDW is a year older. And he's had more senior squad experience. He also led the Asian Cup 2011 campaign as the lone striker. Until Ji came to Sunderland, Son was his backup.

When they were younger, the hope was one of two of them would break through to superstar status. There are less doubts of Son making it as he's done well at HSV. And he is the more explosive forward with spectacular moments of brilliance, so he's thought of very highly.

With Ji, he's still rehabilitating his image and his career after moving to Sunderland. But the Korean managers appreciate his versatility and his time at Augsburg has been great for getting his international career back on track as well. There are doubts that he'll reach superstar status like Son will. However, Ji has the benefit of military exemption so he can keep developing in Europe like Park Ji Sung did.

I think a lot of people were aggravated when O'Neill did nothing with him, never really rotated the squad, but gave those few spot appearances to McFadden and Saha who offered absolutely nothing.

Seeing him play well at a young age in the Bundesliga in a bunch of positions where we really don't have much was to me the absolute best symbol of how badly and in what ways O'Neill got it wrong here.

Like Villa and Southampton last year we're in a position to buy young players and blood them in - to do things the right way, to bring an end to years of stopgaps and easy answers.

To tell the truth, none of us know how good Ji actually is now. I want to see him stay and get a chance more for symbolic reasons than anything else.

@sebbest_s: #Verzweiflung MT @ThomasHennecke: BVB hat nach englischen Medienberichten beim AFC Sunderland ein Angebot für Dong Won-Ji abgegeben.

Aye.

And with the prospect of Ji moving on for £4m-plus – and there has been speculation of £6m-£7m if a bidding war develops – Sunderland will cash in.
